Animals and the CR
Now I'm not trying to start another endless debate over the interpretation of the CR, but I want to know what other players think about animals, for instance. I won't cite any particular incidents, but not only have I mentioned what the animals look like IC, but I've heard lots of other players make the same kind of comments as well.
For example, if in the game you see a lion attack someone, are you supposed to know what it looks like? I mean, you saw it, so wouldn't you know what it looked like? But having never 'seen' an animal, would it look like a different animal to each player?
For another example, you could make a comment on how pretty the colors are on a toucan, but in Cantr a toucan might look like an octopus IRL.
What I'm trying to say is, don't we have to use OOC knowledge IC? If we absolutely cannot use our OOC knowledge, then how do we know what a shield, a bow, or even a building or cottage is? Not to mention the countless other things you can make in the game.

I prefer to assume that they look like what they are in real life. So a toucan will have pretty colors, an octopus will have 8 tentacles, and a lion is a giant cat that can seriously hurt you.
If the programmers had intended for us to make up what the animals looked like in our heads, they wouldn't have given them names that already imprint an idea in our heads, like "bear."
Instead they would have described them as "animal 1," "animal 2." Or some random crap like "124-C" or "fhqwgads." Basically anything but real animal names. Since they gave them real animal names, chances are that's what they wanted us to perceive them as, because the toughness, aggression, and attack strength that those animals have are probably relative to the real life equivalent.

I'd tend to agree with AoM - if everything OOC was to be banned - then nothing would be named after RL items - where you draw the line as to how much your charcters know about things is a personal choice - bar the extremes - which is where the CR rule comes in...
It stiffles RP (which I think is what Cantr is all about - IMO) if we have to worry about 'what does a sheep look like' and 'what does a shield do'... and I somewhat doubt that describing a toucan in RL terms is a CR breach
what is great though - is that someone could run screaming from rabbits 'cos they're big and scary and have large teeth - and there's no way other Cantrians could prove them wrong

I agree with just about everything posted here. And there's something else along these lines that I've been wondering about. I have a charrie in the mountains who decided to settle there. I wanted him to live in a cave instead of a building, but you cannot build a cave in-game. So, now he has a stone building, but it is called a cave, and he refers to it as a cave. Extensions inside are called chambers and tunnels, so it's totally like a cave.

Heh, I don't knwo about that. I've got plenty of deer around my house in RL, and I've never had one viciously attack me.

Well, Cantrains gather wood from trees and stone from the ground, boats float on water, cars, motorcycles, bicycles and ricshaws travel on roads, potatoes and carrots are dug from the ground....there seem to be alot of things in Cantr that are seen as they are IRL, The deer in your yard may not attack you....but that doesn't mean they are not agressive where you cannot see them...(LOL I watch animal planet) Either ..or... there is no way that all forms of OOC knowledge can be kept out of Cantr.... just my opionion and you know what they say about opinions...

Again the Captial Rule is taken out of context. It is meant to not use OOC knowledge that gives you an unfair advantage over other players and/or results in a complete lack of imagination. (I.E. Don't call it Ford Motor Company even if your name happens to be Henry Ford; that's just stupid)

Do you seem weak and in your twenties? Maybe the deer around your house don't like to pick on newspawns?

I think when I was around 10 or so, there was a man in PA attacked by a deer. Seriously.
I remember my aunt read it in the paper aloud and then like for months after every time I saw a deer I wondered if it was going to bound at me.
Anyway, that's beside the point. I agree as well, they obviously look like what we see in the real world. (Or okay, maybe bears in cantr have mohawks,) but I assume that they still look like a bear. Wonder if any of them are polar bears?

I saw a clip on real TV of a guy getting knocked out by a deer.
