1. When did you start smoking and why?

At 16-17. Because friends of mine did it and I wanted to look cool too. Started smoking weird brands that were nigh impossible to get and thought it was cool because of that.
Later just rolled my own, because it tasted better and because it was cheaper ;)

2. How much do you smoke on an average day?

I smoked about 10-15 a day.

3. Do you want to quit? Have you tried to?

I quit one time and after a day or so I started getting delusions and was craving like hell for a cigarette. So after 2 days of that I gave up and started again.
And about 3 years ago, my dentist told me he'd quit just before, using patches and it worked for him. For some reason that was just the drop that flooded the bucket(?) and I bought those patches and used them to quit smoking. Was really smooth sailing to quit with those, it takes care of all the withdrawal symptoms and leaves you to get rid of the habit.

4. Have you noticed decrease of health because of smoking?

No I did not notice when I was smoking. I thought my physical condition was fine, cancer would never hurt me, etc. etc.

Only a month or so after I quit, I started tasting stuff again and that was magical, food just tastes so much better now, that I never am going back to smoking again.
Also my nose doesn't clog up as much as it used to and my physical condition has improved a lot (although I have to say that I also gained about 7kg, but I was skinny to begin with)

1. When did you start smoking and why?

Started at 16 in the bathroom of a pizza place in Rose Hill, Kansas on a High School Quiz Bowl tournament. One of the "cool" nerds I guess. My friend talked me into it it, just like he talked me into to drinking -- not necessarily peer pressure, I guess he just offered and the little angels on my shoulder said, "Why the heck not?"

2. How much do you smoke on an average day?

Started out at 2 or 3 a day -- on the drive to and from school. Bumped up to probably 5 by the next year once the drinking started (Super Bowl party 1996 -- had a Coors Original and loved it, but that isn't up for discussion here) and up to a pack a day by senior year where I earned a temporary nickname of The Chimney.

3. Do you want to quit? Have you tried to?

I quit a couple of times. The first right out of high school. Yacked at the senior kegger after smoking a pack and drinking God knows how much. Everclear and Gatorade curtosy of Herp' -- yikes was she trying to kill me! I was off cold turkey until college when the stressful life of the Chemistry major brought me back to full force. Worked graveyard shift at a grocery store, which meant lots o' smoke breaks in the milk cooler.

Quit for good three years ago after I finished undergrad. Just got bored with the whole thing I guess -- laying on the couch at midnight with half a pint of scotch and a pack of Kamel Reds watching Star Trek just wasn't the exciting life it used to be.

Grad school has almost driven me back to it a couple of times. Bought a pack of Camels and fired up one night and darn near puked, so I figure I might finally be rid of it...

4. Have you noticed decrease of health because of smoking?

I miss waking up with noseplugs every morning  I never really felt winded or any of that. Pretty sure I didn't smell like an ashtray because my best friend in undergrad had no clue for the first year we knew each other and she was one of those people who claimed they could spot a smoker from a block away. I do seem to get the smoker's hack every time I eat a big meal now, though. That gets really irritating.

Now for my anti-anti-smoking rant...

Yes I used to smoke, but am not one of those preachy ex-smokers. The white lies tv people can pucker up and kiss my ass! (Don't know if they have equivalent illogical, irrational, anti-smoking propaganda outside the US) We all know it's bad for you, some of us just don't care, so deal with it. Bitching is air pollution too. A-holes like that actually kept me smoking for an extra two years out of spite. Especially the stuck up chicks that would climb out of the tanning bed and yell at me for giving myslef cancer. Idiots. Glad there weren't any posts like that on this thread...Cantr players must be much more rational

I remember why I smoked and expect you have your reasons if you do too. My unsolicited advice (because I know everyone is dying to know) is if you are able to manage your habit right now...cool - do what you've got to do to keep happy I guess, Seems like a perfectly accepted rationalization for other destructive habits. Just keep it mind that it can sneak up on you -- especially if you have an addictive personality like I do -- and if it does, it can be a hard habit to break. But ya'll already know that.
