@#*&$ OOC legends

Postby The Industriallist » Fri Oct 22, 2004 7:38 pm

Ok...this bothers me. A lot. (happened in Drojf)

976-4: a man in his twenties says: "Sailors consider a real albatross bad luck."

Now, it's possible that this man has met a sailor at some point in his life. It's even (remotely) possible that the sailor told him this.

But...I don't think that there are any albatross anywhere in cantr, and there are certainly none at sea. This is just importing an OOC superstition that not only doesn't exist in cantr, it doesn't have the possibility of existing in cantr. Meanwhile, it's being stated as IC culture... :x

You neglected to mention that the man said this after a boat named The Albatross docked.

You might want to consider switching to decaf.

i'm afraid that doesn't affect the oocness of the comment. sorry.

and from what i know of him, i'd venture to guess that he's not a coffee drinker.

I realize this doesn't add much to the conversation, which ended months ago, but I'm out of minutes, and feel like speculating wildly.

What if the fellow said that because The Albatross is a pirate ship? Then truly, "real" Cantrian sailors (i.e., non-pirates) would consider it unlucky, indeed!

Thank you for letting me blather off-topic momentarily.

Doesn't change the fact. I agree with Industrialist. Also, this is only one example of common occurences in Cantr, which upsets me.

Well I was there when the comment was made in Drojf and feel that the OOC commnets made outloud about it were much more upsetting than the albatross comment. Some things just need to be ignored at times in my opinion.

I find that to be the best statement so far. While it is sometimes okay to offer advice OOC, quietly to someone about their playing style, we much rather that people came to the PD with their complaints. (You'll sometimes note too, that the players that you're having a problem with aren't eager to please you so it just turns into OOC bickering which is disruptive for other players.)

Oh, yes. I'm not saying that it wasn't a breach, or that it wasn't disruptive.

I suppose I was speculating on the kinds of things that would cause a legend to be born in Cantr.
