Using DOS

Postby Solfius » Thu Oct 23, 2003 5:17 pm

Having been brought up on Windows OSs, I have recently been introduced to the power of DOS as an OS (which it is). Does anyone know anything about using DOS? I only know simple things learned from when I had to navigate DOS to start up Windows 3.1.

a man in his thirties says "I come from a time before DOS. What is your question?"

Question: Where to start.

I know next to nothing currently, so I need an introduction, and then I'd probaly progress into programming using DOS, if possible, or at least finding out about advanced uses and theory

My recommendation is to skip DOS and go strait into Java. DOS is interesting but will only introduce concepts that no longer make sense.

Another alternative is "Javascript" so you can see interesting results.

Well, if I'm going to learn OOP I'd probaly learn C++ or C# as I already have experience with C.

I was just interested with DOS because I have a taste for archaic thigns like that, feels a bit more like programming when dealing with DOS etc, than windows

meh, C# isn't all it's cracked up to be...for one, it's made pretty much just for ::shudder::Windows. So if you plan on distributing anything you develop with it, it has a limited purpose. But maybe that's just my hatred for Microsoft and Windows talking. o.o But I need Windows for my cantr experience to be the best u_u ::sigh::

I mastered MS-DOS 6.0 when I was younger. I don't know what version you are using so I'm sure what you are looking for.
Davis is right though. DOS has become obsolete as far as computer systems go. It is only really used as a companion with Windows so should Windows ever crash (which happens often) you have another system to use until Windows is back up again or even go as far as to repair the problem though most of that can be done through another program on newer versions of Windows. DOS is still good to play the old DOS games. Airborne Rangers, anyone?

Ah, someone who doesn't like Microsoft ... I like that! :) ... Although I do use Windows all the time, and I think it is in some respects the best operating system (not in all though!), but I just hate Microsofts attitude and marketing policies ...

But anyway, what I really was going to say: DOS is really crap, why bother? :) ... If you want to play around with a less fancy system than Windows, but with power, play around with Linux ... It's much more useful, I think, to learn those skills, than to learn DOS. (DOS has a shell (command-interface) that is crap, and is hardly multi-tasking even ...)

And if you really, really want to learn DOS, are there no guides online? It's hard to give a full introduction here :) ... I mean, I can give simple info, like:

cd <directory name> is moving into that directory;
mkdir <directory name> creates that directory (or often md works)
dir lists files in your directory
cls clears the screen
etc. etc.

(I've been using DOS for quite a few years, when most people had long switched to Windows :) ... but I couldn't afford a powerful enough computer)

I go along with Jos. Take Linux. If you don't wanna use a GUI, don't install it and you only have command line ;).

DOS is definately as better system than wWindows. I hate Windows. It acts ujp. There is much better software but they can't be marketed due to the stranglehold put my Microsoft whihc make them a virtual monopoly.

I have conspiracy theory about Microsoft. I think they intentionally put bugs in the software so you are forced to upgrade in a couple of years. If not then it'll be very slow.

Bill Gates is really a bug meanie. Windows XP was a MAJOR disappointment. Most of the software that works on Windows 2000 doesn't work on XP. It's terrible. The biggest difference between 98 and 2000 was a bit more shadows. Comeon. Does anybody else agree with me about this or am I alone?

Well, I don't agree entirely ... I don't think they put bugs consciously, and some software packages of Microsoft are really quite impressive. I agree about Windows, although I do really like XP, but Office has not been beaten by any other office package I think.

I do have my own conspiracy theory about Microsoft, though :) ... I always have the impression that they have a deal with manufacturers - if you put Microsoft on all your systems, and make it all so that only Microsoft drivers work, then we'll make our programs bigger and bigger so that people always need to buy your new hardware :) ...

Because, there is no obvious other reason why Microsoft is making its applications so big and monstruous in its use of computer recourses ...

Microsoft Windows XP in my experience has been rejecting certain programs that have worked on Windows 2000. We (where I live) have tried for eons and know we have all tthe right settings and our computer capability is very good. There is no huimnaly possible reason why it shouldn't work. So we called the Microsoft hotline and they said that XP will reject the program no matter what you do. Very frustrating. XP does have some very good qualities I do admit but in my case we have had quite a few problems that match the impact of the benefits.
