Combination Locks

Postby Riggly » Thu Dec 02, 2004 1:35 pm

I searched through the forums here and didn't really come across any mentions of it .. but my thought was: combination locks

I was thinking to use these locks more on buildings but I suppose they could be used on vehicles as well.

The combination could either be randomly generated when the lock is made or it could be changeable.

Of course they would have their have their good and bad elements .. ie

scenario 1 - combination lock is place on door of business .. keys aren't required .. employees who know the combination can simply enter .. saves the trouble of making keys and the chance of losing them

scenario 2 - theif gets the combination to buidling lock .. possibly changes the lock and hijacks the building .. etc

Scenario 3: Owner forgets the combination to their lock and cannot get into their own building.

Scenario 4: Combination locks are already in the game, just not programmed.

One day.

Scenario 5: Everyone will go on and on about how great an idea this is. Then as soon as it's implemented, more or less those SAME people will complain about how bad an idea it was.

Well, that's the way most changes happen, as far as I can see.

It'd be nice if anyone who disliked a suggestion actually said so, and why, when a suggestion is first made here.

I like the idea of combination locks on bikes, but not on cars or buildings...

Why you say?
Well because that is the way I grew up, I guess.

I like this idea. Especially the thought of not having to make copies of key cause it is so hard when you have 5 or more keys to make for at least 5 or more people. It can become costly.

If they write it down it should be on an ingame note.

Anyway, in my opinion this is not a priority. Keys do fine. Combination lock is quite high tech. We have survived without it for now on and there are better things to think about.

I would say that Combination Locks are mighty fancy tech for cantr...but then, RL difficulty and IC difficulty aren't within shouting distance of each other, so that could be OK.

Here's an objection. How do you stop someone from breaking them by trying every combination? IRL, something like that would be a constant, obsessive task that everyone would notice and might take you many hours with a good lock. IC, depending on implementation no one would notice. And it wouldn't take any real time at all...you could work on other things all the same.

I'm sure the coders will come up with a good implimentation. However the chances of sombody guessing .. lets say .. an 8 digit combination are 99999999 to 1. Their character would likely die of starvation or ripe old age in Cantr time before that happened .. and if they did happen to guess the right combo .. well then more power to them.

I think this is a good idea, and I don't plan to say how bad an idea it is later unless a deranged side effect with no connections to locks were to be implemented. Since the PD usually goes for at least dubious realism this would seem unlikely. My complaints regarding things I advocated is usually connected to implementation or numbers that are significantly wrong.
A question, though: Would you have to unlock the lock to get in? Or would entering the combination allow you access?
Portable locks would also be very interesting. As in if you successfully unlock them you could take them.

Well there really isn't anything stopping someone from guessing those 3 digit locks that are placed on bikes and what not. No one really pays attention to you anymore. Heck if I saw it I would figure that it was just someone struggling with their lock. A 3 digit lock really wouldn't take more than 2 hours to crack. If you know that someone goes to the same spot every day and parks their bike in the same spot then you could easily have that bike stolen in a week. That is why my locks all have keys.
