Disgusting! I would absolutely hate it! How do you dare suggest it? Leave it as it is!

Character introductions

Postby Jur Schagen » Wed Dec 08, 2004 4:16 pm

Let me start by saying that I really like the dynamic naming system, introducing the possibility to have multiple aliases or adding short descriptions to the names you are using for yourself (like "Jake Jones - owns the tool shop")... but...

What I find annoying is the fact that you have to attach the name to each persn that introduces himself; each time that's three clicks (new pages - server time!) plus typing or copy-pasting the name. In a big town with lots of newbies this isn't fun at all.

My suggestion:
1. - create a new edit box called "Introduce" where people can type the name they want to introduce themselves with;
2. When entering "John Doe", send out an event to all at the location: "John Doe says: "Hello I am John Doe"".
3. For all people at the location THAT DID NOT ALREADY GIVE HIM A NAME, the name of the speaking char gets changed to "John Doe";
4. For everyone that already gave him a name, do not give him the new name. If you had previously named him "Cheating bastard", you would still see "Cheating bastard says: "Hello I am John Doe"", and his name to you would still be "Cheating bastard".

What do you think?

Jur.

It's important that I know when someone new is introduced and I have changed their name. I need to know whom I have really just met and whom I knew from before. This system makes it impossible to know unless I put some sort of identifying marker in the dynamic names of all the people I meet so that I'll be able to distinguish the auto named people from the ones I knew already. Adding the marker would take just as much of my time as putting in the name myself.

I don't like this sort of automation and I can foresee it leading to some strange and nasty situations.

There are many reasons, as part of who your character is, RPing etc... that people would want to remember someone by a different name, or not remember their name at all...

Sorry - don't like this idea... :(

I like the idea if it were changed a bit.

Instead of automatically naming the person for you, their name in their talking should become a hyperlink, and clicking it automatically sets their name.

So...

a man in his twenties says: "Hello, I'm Anthony Roberts"

Then, clicking on the name "Anthony Roberts" will send to the server that name and automatically set the character as that.

Now that would be better, save you time, and avoid Kroner's situation.

Or could it be so that character menu would open up in a popup window, so that if you have been sleeping a day or two in a big town you don't have to reload the events page again after naming every person who introduces themselves. (If you let the page load and then click on the back button it can give you errors or if you load the page enough of times it hides all the events and you must click "Show all" to be able to continue the numbing naming process.)

So if clicking on a name would open up a new (small) window, you could name lots of people and the events page would be loaded only once.

I actually like that it takes a bit of time to write down someones name. That means that you sometimes won't bother to do it, functioning like when you don't bother to remember someone IRL.

This idea sounds alot better. I love it. Especially the idea of it popping up in a seperate window like Seko said. It would save alot of minutes especially when Cantr is slow and it takes like 5 mins for the Show All button to show all of the events.

The hyperlink idea seems fine, but at the same time, I have to agree with Pirog. I forget a lot of peoples names the first time I hear them IRL.. and the way it is now does implement this (even if not necessarily on purpose)

Well, as Seko said when you use the back button to much it causes script errors.

It can cause errors sometimes, but I usually get them only when I go back past an action that actually changed something.

I Get them almost every single time I use my back button. I don't have the slightest idea why, but I never used to get them. I have to say, it really really sucks as far as minutes go. :(
