Docking Speed Reversal

From what I understand from studying vehicles and their calculations, I came to the conclusion that when a boat docks, it docks at the speed that the boat normally is. However, this MUST be changed! Docking speeds should be input just like all other details of the boat, because it's insane to watch a huge boat dock much, MUCH, faster than a small boat.

In a previous instance, two boats were docking at the same location. The longboat was able to dock and undock and leave off the map before the dinghy was able to even dock. If common sense serves me, the dingy would have been easier to dock, because you just drift on shore and you're done...

from what i've heard, the time it takes to dock is based on the distance from the dock point and the speed of the boat. the time involved is actually how long it would take for the boat to reach the dock from where you press dock. this makes sense.

of course i've also heard some weird things about how docking percentage progresses. also i've never piloted a boat in cantr so i can't back up any of what i've said with experience, just what i've heard explained before.

Yes, I believe you are correct. But that's the problem. The slower the boat, the longer it takes to reach the shore and dock. Yet, when the boat is -so very close- to the shore, it still has to keep going, until it reaches the "docking" coordinates, which is crazy. A faster boat swopps right the spot with no hassle, where as slow ones take a day or so to dock, and it's unfair, really.

So, that's why I propose, Resources Department should be able to input the speed at which the boat moves while docking, but that speed should only engage when it's closer to the shore to keep it realistic.

Are you saying that faster boats should not move faster than slower boats?

He's saying that larger boats should not dock faster than smaller boats.

Now considering in real life it's easier to dock a tugboat over a huge oceanliner, he has a point. However, think about what a large boat/fast boat requires, a lot more materials in Cantr terms, hence, shouldn't they have an advantage? Also smaller ships seem to be able to dock at more things, so they are already advantaged in that sense. It's really not fair for those who go the extra mile and build large ships, when you look at everything.

And Kroner's point is that docking time is time taken to reach the place you land. Actually landing doesn't add anything to it. So the faster ship, which is also usually the larger ship, completes it's run in faster, then attaches to land (or whatever) instantly.

I still don't like it.

Perhaps once the boat reaches shore, it should actually take some time to dock there?

Ie:

A Galleon docks normally, but once it reaches shore, it ends up taking another 4 turns to dock.
A Longboat docks normally, but once it reaches shore, it ends up taking another 2 turns to dock.

It might balance out the fact that larger boats dock quicker than smaller boats, which is illogical. Plus, true, smaller boats have the advantage of being able to dock in more places, however, smaller boats are also usually slower, and carry less, which is their obvious disadvantage.

I just want to see some sort of system to ensure that smaller boats dock faster than larger boats, without fugging up the entire boat speed system, if you know what I mean.

I would like to add something to this. It kinda involves piracy and attacking coastal towns. It is highly unrealistic that a boat can dock instantly. Therefore, when a boat begins to dock, it should be visible to everyone in town hours before the boat actually docks. Cantr is a slow-paced game. So it is unfair that someone is able to dock, enter a town, do whatever evil deeds they want to do, get back on their boat, and undock in a matter of minutes. My suggestion is that the townspeople can see a boat begin to dock, and it may take a half a day before they are fully docked and are able to get off. Because in real life it takes time for a boat to dock, and people would surely see it coming before it happened.

Just a note, you can see ships approaching the town... There isn't an event, but they show up on the location map.

That's not always true. If you have a fast boat, and you start docking to a coaster harbour or landing stage (Which you can do before you even see the city on your location map) it's possible to dock without anyone seeing your boat.

I agree, you should be given an event when someone starts docking at your location, or on your boat.
