I saw the punching bag idea and thought of a gym, Couldnt you make machines, like, bench press. Box Squat, ect. Also, Tredmill, So on the roads you can be faster if you worked on those more... It's just an idea..

Chopping lumber, digging stones etc. is a much better way to get in shape.

Gyms exist only because we in our society doesn't have to do manual labour anymore. In Cantr there would be no real need for a gym...

Not really true, Pirog. Chopping wood would be great excercise for some muscles, but not so good for others. Unless you cut people the same way you cut wood (not a good fighting style), I wouldn't expect it to be such a big help. A gym lets you selectively train the muscles you need.

I still don't like the idea. But I thought I should say.

I cut wood in the same way I cut people, ie with a very sharp sword.
The gym idea is ok, but maybe practicing on targets with weapons would be better.

The point with gyms was originally to specialise the training so that you would LOOK good. That is why only body builders went to gyms originally. You can still get the same training by doing hard labour etc. The only difference is that you won't get chiseled muscles...and that is because bodies aren't designed to look like that naturally.

i also rig up the wood so that it's connected to a robotic frame with an computer program that makes it into an interactive fighting machine that models common human fighting styles!

but anyway... hard work builds muscle, yes. but as has been said, doing specific exercises, like at the gym let's you target specific muscles. yes, body builders use this to make themselves look good, but it's equally useful for improving muscle groups that really do need strengthening in order for you to be more productive in physical activities such as fighting. doing physical work like chopping wood does not ganantee that you will strengthen the muscles you need for fighting. additionally you can do things at the gym such as hitting a punching bag that help improve fighting technique. this has little to do with strength and has nothing to do with strenuous exercise.

You can't train everything simply by cutting wood. My point was rather that by doing hard labour, walking or running regularly, going out hunting etc. there would be no need for a gym unless you wanted to look fit above just being fit.
But we can agree to disagree if you like :)
