Shouting through doors

Postby SekoETC » Sun Nov 28, 2004 1:12 pm

The original reasoning was that some characters were unable to drag notes due to physical weakness, but it has since been fixed so that it's possible even for wounded people. I still think that shouting through doors would be a good addition to the game, since dragging notes requires several clicks while shouting would only take one.

They should hear a muffled voice, or maybe some of the words, but, yeah that's a pretty good idea.

Why can you not drag notes? A couple of my characters have dragged notes quite recently.

>Black Canyon: I really don't know. Ok the character who would need the option is in middle strenght, but the same problem has occurred with another character who was perfect health and almost not tired. Then again someone who is slightly wounded and has been working on building projects for many days can slide notes without a problem. So would it be harder if the door is locked? It used to be possible.

It depends how hurt the character is. I ran into thte same problem. You would think a note wouldn't be that hard of a thing to push under a door, but apparently it takes quite a bit of skill in Cantr.

An update to this suggestion: Even though it has been made so that everyone can drag notes, I would still like to see the option of shouting through doors.

- It should be muffled so that mostly you can hear only vowels, and consonants would be replaced with apostrophes.
- If there are several consonants in a row, they will be truncated to just one apostrophe.
- Only words that are written in ALL CAPS would be interpreted as shouting, and single letter words like "A" and "I" would be ignored if they aren't preceded or followed by a longer all-caps word.
- If a person shouts too much, they will lose their voice for a few hours and all they say will be converted to lowercase letters.

I did something similar in C++ class so it shouldn't be too hard to program. Although processing non-traditional characters like ä might cause some trouble and using this idea for Chinese characters is most likely impossible. It also doesn't take into account the existence of silent e:s and stuff like that.

That's still dumb. Not shouting through doors is an integral feature in Cantr that allows for certain techniques to be applied during wartime or for players. If you are wanting to make it realistic, damn remove that feature of being able to see who drags stuff from behind a door.
Nakranoth's "evil" character says:
"Thief! That's terrible! *shakes his head* That would hurt people's feeling if I did that."

What certain techniques? Do you mean pretending to be some other person? Maybe the identity of the shouter could be blurred, it would only say male or female. And if you want your prison to be sound-proof, put your prisoner in a sub-room. People already need to do that to stop them from dragging notes. I think shouting is more realistic than notes but the current system forces people to communicate through notes and knocking because there is no other way.

I agree that the dragger shouldn't be visible to the other side of the door but that's a whole 'nother topic.

Gee, now that you mentioned it, I checked out my events and there was a note dragged and it didn't say who the dragger was. Cool. But that's still a whole 'nother topic.
