Town Bells

Postby Nixit » Thu Nov 18, 2004 4:15 am

Don't you think it would be cool if you could build a town bell. Then, if a pirate attack or something, you could ring it, and everybody in the town, even if they were in a building would here it, and come runnin' out. Just something to ponder.

I like it.
In fact it could work pretty well, ad it is something that would have to be thought about.

Of course, you could just knock on all the doors...

lol, you could have a lock on it or something like that... like there would be a gate that is locked, and only citizens of the town would be able to ring it.

In some buildings there are other rooms, so if you knocked, other people might not hear it. Plus, it would only be used in emergencies or something like that.

I really would like a way to alert people inside buildings. Good idea!

Perhaps a more mobile signal horn would be possible too.

Usually you don't have to warn a town about pirate attacks. The pirates weapons do that well enough

Well it could be in a bell tower... But if it was behind a lock that creates a problem, if the person with the key is not awake then you're screwed. Do you know why they set those big bells in towers btw? Because if they were close to ground, the people near would be deaf as Quasimodo.

Man1: *Bangs on the door* Wake up, the pirates are coming!
Bellringer: Huh?
Man1: I SAID - THE PIRATES are coming! Ring the damn bell!
Bellringer: A what went down the hill?!
Man1: Argh! ...Nevermind, I'll get the crowbar!

That isn't the point. Perhaps you would like to stay outside, so that you don't miss vital things. This isn't just to save time or resources...you could have signal systems, where different signals meant different things, making it possible to organize people or use special tactics without having to talk about it.

Yeah, it doesn't have to be a bell, but basically some way to communicate with people in other buildings from the outside. I think thats what you said.

Up.

Bronze bells (not so easy to make).

Usable only once per day.

You pick one predefined sequency from a list and it's heard everywhere in the town and in a ranged area, including roads, sea and other locations.

It's up to each location to decide what each sequency means and try to make everybody know about it.

If your location is under attack, you can ring the bell so those travelling in know about it and those travelling away can return to defend.

It can be used too to call all people in buildings and nearby locations to a big event, like a council, a wedding, a market day...

We currently don't have a way to make immovable objects play sounds like instruments. The functionality of the idea is very similar to what has been mentioned in the musical instruments threads.
