I am kind of disappointed how widespread the lack of slavery is in the game. Don't get me wrong, I can perfectly understand why random slavery is not instituted and why every attempt to do so eventually leads to a massacre of the slavers. But at the same time, I always expected to find some town somewhere that had a system where prisoners could be made slaves of their victims, or in the case where there is no specific victim left, to the government. Pirate comes and kills your wife, death sentence. Merciful? Okay, he's your slave for life now. Robbed you? You own him until he has paid you back the value of the stolen goods (I would say whether you got your stuff back or not this ought to apply) plus some specified bonus.

I am happy to see that plenty of my characters have faced exile for their "crimes". Although most of the time these crimes were only mouthing off.

I've never seen any town implement gladiator battles between prisoners. I suppose that might be due to an insufficiently low population of prisoners, so the only way you could do that would probably be to gather up local prisoners on a regional basis, which sort of requires at least a semblance of regional governance, which can be hard to find in any meaningful sense.

Or a penal colony... not just boring endless indoor "repair my shit" tasks but a legitimate colony! Some desolate backcountry town could be turned into a penal colony that might encourage some prisoners to choose to live. Have a garrison of seasonal guards drafted from towns in the region, or hire full-time professionals. Allow prisoners to work outside in limited numbers and shifts in exchange for good behavior, plus better food, clothing, booze, entertainment, et cetera, which they can pay for with their own money that they earn as a cut of their own slave labor. For lesser crimes, they could eventually pay off their price and be set free.

Some old thread once asked if Cantr is a dystopia. Ignoring the post-apocalyptic emptiness most regions face, ignoring the vast hoards of treasure sitting behind locked doors never to be seen again, ignoring all of that... purely from a justice/legal perspective, I say yes. I say that you cannot call anything a civilization if law is in the hands of whatever angry mob happens to be awake that day in that town, where they might hand out a death sentence one year for a crime that is forgiven with a simple apology the next time around. Because for the most part, sentences are determined on an arbitrary basis by mob rule or at best a dictatorial decision by the keyholders, never recorded for the sake of proper procedure and establishing case law and internal consistency, where alleged criminals are rarely if ever afforded any rights and no standards of evidence exist. At best we might call this a kind of tribal justice, but definitely not a civilization.

I've seen plenty of indicators that slavery, at one point in the far past, did exist somewhere... But not anymore. In fact, if you so much as mention slavery, everyone jumps on a high horse and goes to promptly stop it due to OOC feelings on the matter. I would love to see penal colonies and stuff, too, though. I once tried to start up an organization where someone would go around, collecting petty criminals, bring them back to a town, and basically train them and give them a place in a strict organization, etc., and rehabilitate them. It failed because nobody wanted to give up their criminals. They preferred to keep them locked up forever, because (and this is just my assumption) it increased their chance of getting newspawns, or possibly because they hated them on an OOC level and wanted them to get disheartened and quit? Dunno. Maybe I'll try it again sometime.

Omeo used to be a slaver town, and it worked very well until some Polish powergamers came and killed the leader within seconds. Although at that point she had already agreed to release all the slaves. Also some of the slaves were Dutch.

I had a character spawn there when it was a slave camp. She lasted less than 2 Cantr hours. :x

My absolute second character ever accidentally came across some slavers in some mountains. He didn't realize what he'd come across at first, but then he saw a building with a name to do with slavery. He thought, "WTF." and left immediately. Unfortunately not quick enough, because the people that ran the town followed and killed him. He had traded with one of the guys before, too, and he was ill equipped and not inclined to do anything about the situation (a hermit) but they didn't believe him.

Oh boy do you remember which town? I've been trying to rack my brain for ages as to which town looooooong ago had a big slave operation. That was incredibly fun. Deep rooms with plenty of projects and a big slave... uh... community? Population?

I'm sorry, I don't, and that acct is lost to me, so I can't even see what forest he spawned in to know the general area :( That event coupled with RL ended my interest in the game at the time. I didn't really get to play him long enough to be very familiar with the game. I do remember he chopped wood and made a longbow the old way. I might have a report that has it though. I'll look.

I don't think so? This would have been in the 900's, but I do not really know when he started playing. I also was not very involved in the community outside of the game at that time.

Firstly, thank you for specifying Cantr. I'd have otherwise been confused with the slave town he ran outside of Cantr. :P

Guessing you mean Cantr Island. I have no idea - but that's really interesting in any case.

This would have been around the mid-ish 1000's when I first joined, so around 4,000 days ago (11 x 365 = 4,000 days).

It very well could line up with the_antisocial_hermit's experience. Hm!

It could have still been running by then, maybe. When I rejoined, it was 1145. I don't think I had a char come across it at that point though I think I heard of one taken down and wondered about it.

Wow, at least in the green world I can feel young.

Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. He is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”

I'm fairly sure it was a single male individual. An older, and strong, individual. Maybe he had help, but I'm fairly sure he was alone. At least, for my character specifically, that is.
