Thank you very much for your friendly answer. I probably have misunderstood your tone or attitude by language and interpretive differences. My apologies. Half of my texts are courtesy of Google Translator. I have to write very carefully and exactly what I mean to convey information correctly (and correct the own translator) xD

As I do not want to monopolize (or distort) the thread of this post, nor its original purpose, I'll leave it until someone raises me any doubts, questions or allusion (or I can not resist because the subject-matter is extremely interesting to me!). I think I have said all my opinions about what has been talked here. I hope to have contributed to the community with this, or at least have given another point of view about some things.

Idem, and thanks for reading!

As most of my characters have been town leaders for many RL years, I want to validate what Sherman said (that getting town citizens to help lead is hard). I can also say that my characters have been both complimented and hated (both in game and by players) for their leadership even though their manners of leading have been rather similar. Long ago I took the stance of continually looking for people to help lead the town, as I don't have time in real life. One of the main reasons I play Cantr is out of a sense of responsibility, because someone has to take care of the tedious work of leading towns. However, my characters have received a lot of hate just for existing as a leader when things are going downhill, even though they exist to serve. If you want to change things, then lead. And if you're somewhere where the current leader isn't looking for new leaders, then lead anyway (not necessarily the government). You don't need a position, nor keys, to enliven a town.

And I've seen people leave even relatively large and active towns (not that that means much) because they feel like it's too quiet. I'd be interested to learn they found more activity elsewhere. It's a problem wherever you go, perhaps even no matter who leads, although one or two characters can at least create a constant chatter if they choose..and one person can make a big difference. But I'd say blaming the current characters or leaders doesn't do much good.

Now I want to say that I think Jota's questions are good:
Jota wrote:Was there a clear distinction between what belonged to the leader and what belonged to the community? Or is this line was fuzzy?

How they were rewarded for their responsabildiades characters? It was clear this system?

What expectations had your subordinates to fulfill their own goals? Could they possess very title or exchange goods freely share (a considerable amount based on the work they did) I mean; The value of their work (or production) was proportional to the property that could be as personal property (or private, as desired interpreting).

A little more formality for what rewards leaders receive and what they can do might help in some cases, although I've also seen cases in Cantr where there's too much formality and process. One thing a couple characters of mine have tried is providing a rewards system, but even material benefits isn't enough on its own to attract people. You can say, put your name on this list for a free vehicle, and you might be surprised how many don't sign. I haven't quite tried that one yet though. Not a bad idea..

I've experienced cases where there was a clear distinction between town resources and a leader's personal resources and also where the line is fuzzy, and really that distinction doesn't seem to make much difference. It's just the leaders that have to pay attention to it anyway.
On the other hand, giving everyone more access to town resources and allowing them to decide how to use them does seem to at least decrease complaints and the sense that the town leaders are hoarding things. But keep in mind that even if all resources and items are left unlocked and everyone has access to them, they still sit around.

If by this post I'm proposing anything, it's that putting energy into discouraging current leaders doesn't do much good, but that acting on your own in positive ways despite what others are doing does do good. Adamantly expressing that Cantrian life is crumbling causes people to focus on the fact that it's crumbling and in my view accelerates the crumbling, because people then have a negative view of Cantr. Don't underestimate the power of positive thinking.

I say these things because I've witnessed them, years after years, circles of life after circles of life.

To be honest, I've had a rather hard time with everything as of late.
I've neglected to even check my characters this past week, and as a result, three of them died. One was a character I have had for almost two years now, and that did make me quite upset, given how much time I had put into the aforementioned character. But at the same time... my roleplay with her was all but dead. It was time.
On a related note... I have been considering taking a break, if not quitting the game entirely. I would really rather not, but I truly have been struggling with immersing myself into the atmosphere. :( I am not sure what I'll do as of yet, but... we'll see.

I guess you were referring to the first post? Yes, I play Coventina. It's not really a secret, I made it public several years ago when I got tired of the secrecy. You can PM me.

To get back to the original topic... <_<

I've seen questions like this one pop up on the forums from time to time. Often, I see them in threads like "Thinking of Quitting" or as original posts. When this one first came on my radar, I dismissed it. I was having a good amount of enjoyment. I had the stupidest grin on my face for days when Biin's muse whispered his silly songs into my subconscious. I'm sure my co-workers thought I was on some kind of happy pills. I enjoyed playing with a lot of very positive characters played very well by various players. Even antagonists with opposing goals that drove me crazy...they were so interesting and made me think about things from perspectives I've never though before; and game or not, seeing things differently can make one's real life better.

Yet, these days, the question plagues me. There are some characters I'm actually afraid to play these days--even my quietest, most reclusive character has come under scrutiny. And my loudest--I've shut him up and I'm not sure if he's going to be let out of the box anytime soon. I'm already being chided for delving into "Green World" as my Other calls it. Maybe my skin is too soft, but some of the feedback hasn't been encouraging to the spirit. I wouldn't go for the "h"-word as I've experienced much worse in different places, but I begin to chafe at the negative attention that those with worse offenses don't seem to endure in equivalency. And so many players have gone...

The characters I have left will be slowly exiting--which is really, really hard, like killing off your own children--but I'm feeling a deep and profound sense of tiredness that I fear is creeping into the waking world. I'm betting my co-workers are now convinced that whatever happy pills I had a few months ago have long been submitted to the local trash can.

What do you mean afraid to play? What sort of scrutiny? In game or OOC?

This makes me sad :( I'm pretty sure at least two of your characters have significantly shaped mine's lives, and one in particular would be a huge blow to lose.

I'm certain that this goes for the majority of the game's playerbase. The songs sung by Biin were one of my favourite things about Cantrian culture and inspired me to write my own intentionally terrible music in parody of him and many real life artists. Someone sent me the funeral logs for Augusta the Dutch, dragonslayer/warrior, and the humorous way that he dealt with the situation using clumsiness and song. I hadn't met him physically before except briefly on Bolt Blackburn (devoted servant of the temple in Kiii) so it was kind of like finally meeting someone famous. He didn't disappoint.

Aye, though the latter I referred to isn't Biin there was a time he was a major thing I looked forward to when I logged in. I'd hoped one of my characters returning to civilisation might bring that back, but I also know how it feels when it's just too much to play any more D:

No, I'm not enjoying it anymore. In fact, I stopped playing it at all (well, almost). Plus, I don't have much time lately, so that is a nail in the coffin.

Yet I am still not convinced to press "the big button"

I'm bringing people together, discussing new plans and strategies, and coordinating a restart. This is challenging and fun! Cantr is dynamic and constantly changing. This is a differential.
Cantr II is a social simulator. What is not working is due a problem in the society.
Cantr is like Vegas - what happens in the game should be in the game.
