Tattoo's Marks and Scars?

Postby Redstar » Mon Nov 08, 2004 4:03 pm

Hi! I was just thinking that it might add to the story factor of each character if they developed scars from battle, or had tattoos or something, and then it would be added to their description of the character. I dunno if this idea has been presented before. Maybe it could be a bit more complex even. The more scars you have, the 'uglier' or less attractive your character would be.

Several battle scars - ugly
few battle scars - not very attractive
none - handsome or beautiful lol or something lol

Tattoos could just be way of identifying other characters. Could be added into their description and the character could type in what the tattoo is of, and then display it on teh description thing lol yeah.

I never saw anything wrong with constantly "reminding" the programming/responsible depts. about features people like ;)

I only skimmed through that link West so I could be wrong but I don't think it mentions tats which is somthing else that Redstar suggested.

I think it's a good idea. Maybe it could have somthing to do with a knife and ink (which isn't in the game as far as I know...) I dunno. Needs some work.

It would be hard and kind of pointless to implement such things before general appearances comes into effect I think...but I would very much like to see it later on.

I would prefer to see it replacing general appearances, to be honest. A good way to allow clan or town "branding" without the whole pandora's box of non-voluntary "racial" appearances. I continue to believe appearances should be either role-played or at least voluntary. But tattoos are a very nice half-way point.

Anyone who'se character is effected by their appearance has RL problems with racism...but I don't see why cantr should have any interest in their attitudes.

It's more the case that I have problems with looking like an orc. Remember that only 8% of us voted yes to "Cantr looks should completely deviate from real world looks". So, no people with green skin and purple eyes. Which leaves you to play around with mixing 2 different skin pigments in various shades across broad continental areas. Boring! Why spend fabulously precious programming time on it when tattoos are simply more interesting, or so I think.

Appearances can't be RPed efficently. The only way to do it is to constantly mention their look when you speak to people...it gets frustrating both for the player doing it and others.

You seem terrified of the whole issue with "races"...I find that strange.

I certainly understand your point about not wanting to look like an orc, but it goes beyond that since you are trying to scare people with the microscopic possibility of Jos being sued if "races" similar to those IRL are implemented.

And I don't even understand how tatoos would be able to replace appearances, unless Cantrians are precise clones when it comes to looks.

Based on general principles I would say they are...and people who decide to RP appearances are skirting the edges of a breach. While the principle that you can RP things that don't interfere with or overlap overlap with implemented features says it's OK, the logical principle that you can see someone's skin, hair and eyes even when they aren't talking says it's absurd.

So I would say that by implication their appearances ought to be 'nothing worth mentioning' at present.

Perhaps some people have a bit more vivid imagination than you do

Cantr would simply be too boring if my characters couldn't see more than I as a player can...

It isn't a matter of what I want. (irrelevantly) I'm totally neutral with respect to descriptions, with the plus being people will stop doing it wrong, the minus being that programming will work on it instead of something else.

My issue is that you're supposed to see something that you cannot see on a reliable basis. It shouldn't be the case that only people who are in town when you arrive know your hair color, or even only people who hang arround long enough for you to say something.

I'll tolerate ANYTHING if it's consistant...I'll rant against it if I don't like it, maybe, but I'll tolerate it. This isn't consistant, though. I simply refuse to acknowledge any description that's only available when the player feels like mentioning it. Because that isn't reality.

For that matter, it isn't consistant that only people who chose to have eye color. Hair is okish, since they aren't bald...but if cantrians are allowed to have eye colors, they must all have them (unless they lack eyes).

EDIT: guess it is about what I want...but it isn't really about descriptions

I would certainly prefer if it was consistent, but an RPG will always need a few voids to be filled in by your imagination. In some cases that is what makes RPGs great.

You have a bunch of identical statistics without anything interesting about them to start with and from that you can carve out a complex and unique character.

I see your point, but a game like this will always have those voids. Although Cantr is impressively advanced considering it is a free game there are also huge gaps in the realism of things...for example the limitations of tool making. Since RPing appearances doesn't hurt anyone I have no problem with it, but I would of course prefer a consistent system.
