I think it's evident that most of this is pretty tongue-in-cheek, even though a smaller map would probably fix some of the problems that people face at this time. Don't worry, Fu-sians. 8)

Cantr is a society sim. You don't really get many societies with just a handful of players and all scattered and spread so thin across such a gigantic map.

Obviously the map isn't going to be changed, pretty sure it's not possible for the current staff to physically alter it even if they and all the players were 100% in agreement on the need for it, so yeah, I think anybody freaking out about it can relax.

But I've long had the impression the game was designed with something like 10X the numbers of players in mind (just look at building capacities to start with, where a single structure could house a town's entire populations and then some...). The huge world was most likely expected to be settled over time as civilizations grew and split, not to fragment an ever shrinking player base even further.

In Cantr any individual character can survive and flourish on its own, almost anywhere on the map. No society building is necessary. This is one of the major design flaws i was talking about.

If reaching any notable goal within Cantr would require some kind of cooperation (and solo survival would be really hard) i am sure a lot more society building would occur and characters would tend to live closer to each other, no matter how large the map is.

Yeah and it's obvious too that game was made for more people with different places for different languages. Current design allows easily to add new language on the game. However spawn system on this game can result in awkward situations (like spawning on foreign town because of travelers, very excellent situation when none of there can speak english due IG rules or simply don't know language)

Making game harder to survive alone would also make life harder for people on Fu and other remote places, which could mean many unwanted deaths. And shrinking map wouldn't necessary help, there's still capital rule and you would need to be careful with your chars to follow that rule.

Cantr is society simulation but that's in the end up to the players and many don't move around really (well maybe that's OOC influence too, it's easier to life on familiar place). But fact is that playerbase is too small to make many big towns specially then lots of newspawns want to start their own town (and disappoint then they fail because there's not many people to move) The problem is that many existing towns are kinda.. well quiet. Not much really happening on most towns and then people are not wake at same time (slow paced game yeah but playing 5 mins a day gets boring quickly). This might be due time zone differences which isn't so big deal with big towns but on small towns it kinda makes town go on with really slow pace... and makes these towns have some chars awake when none of the rest are etc which in long run isn't so good thing. But that's thing you can't do much but plays on a role why smaller towns are so dull. And I speak here with own experiences, people just don't feel like committing much then simple conversations might take days..

I do still enjoy it but to a lesser extent cause of so many assholes spawning... Where are all the decent folk? I miss the old days.

I guess we are just getting "wrong" kind of new players? Seen many so far that spawn, do crimes and then die.

I don't know if it's wrong kind if players, but lately whoever spawns someone new they are just rude, mannerless and whatever. I mean once in awhile it's great, but come on... I don't want to be waking up to someone getting snarky or what in town. Then have to chase em down after they steal something. I've been a player for 13 + years. It's harder to find the things that keep it enjoyable. Specifically a few specific people and lots of older characters.

I play a low profile chars. In fact, external circumstances made me abandon the roleplay with most of my chars. I'm still struggling to come back into their personalities to play them, but it's hard, and any time I try something happens irl and I don't have the time or mood again. Still, I don't lose hopes, because I enjoy the game someway.

Probably not as intensely as the first time I played, but that's for the better. I had lost interest in the game when I quit, but after a year I came back with a different point of view. I choosed to play the kind of chars that I know I will enjoy. The quiet, not conflict-loving ones, that probably most players may find boring to play. But actually, I've learnt I enjoy being part of the stable environment where other players can build their chars and develop their personalities and conflicts and outstand with amazing roleplays I still enjoy reading. Specially since I'm miles away to be able to write that way. I only wish I was able to get most of the puns and expressions... But this is another reason to enjoy the game, being able to learn new stuff everyday.

And about the newspawns, I must consider myself lucky then, because the vast majority of them seem nice to me. And as the playerbase is so small, my grain of sand will be to keep my stable, boring quotidien roleplaying chars alive as long as I can, even if there's no much going on in the town. Because at the end I think Cant is mostly a matter of persistance, and so far I enjoy the results of this persistance. :)

I've not seen any awful newspawns that I recall. Some I'd describe as delusional I guess, some who weren't much of anything. My characters are all relatively recent - I'd describe three as polite and/or friendly and one as abrupt but civilised.

I'd like if the capital rule was perhaps loosened so things like island-wide governments or police forces could happen, which I think would encourage people to be more active and do more things. I understand not wanting people to unfairly benefit, but for example if island wide government was like 3/4 people, and there was an issue in town A where a char played by government employee A had a char, government char A could sleep through the whole thing?
Otherwise it starts to feel a bit like there's a civilization cap, and the reason that so many newspawns try to start their own town, is that once a town is built and developed...what left is there to do? Or to innovate? You know? Not every place supports businesses, so you either A) fight the status quo B) move to one of the places that do, but then what about your next char? C) start your own town, cause...I mean IDK it's hard for me to have characters without goals. If they don't have goals they end up being sleepworkers, I don't know what to do.

I haven't noticed many problems with newspawns either, even if I've only got a sampling of a few towns to go by. Only one pair in recent memory and it just so happened to be in a place they could be dealt with in the old fashioned way. :P

I hardly ever see spawn and run thieves anymore, but my characters in developed towns would probably at most just go out and have a brief talk with them to see what their deal is. Nothing that would get in the way of a project tick.

I've seen a surprising amount of characters from what must be legitimately new players lately, which is always adorable even if they don't play for very long.

Three factors that can bring down a simulated society: laziness, dishonesty and selfishness.
Cantr II is a social simulator. What is not working is due a problem in the society.
Cantr is like Vegas - what happens in the game should be in the game.

"Does anyone still enjoy the game?"

In a somewhat short response: There is only one character that is preventing me from hitting the "X" so much toxicity in the game now it's unreal.
