Bandwidth

Postby Nick » Thu Oct 16, 2003 12:06 am

Some people on this new board may be too young to cantr to remember the days of the constant bandwidth problems, but I was wondering... this forum must take quite a chunk out of cantr's bandwidth. Not to mention, when people use this site it slows down cantr. Of course many of you know I like the old forums better, but I again suggest that we should use the other one. And yes I realise it is ironic to suggest we stop using this baord by posting a message on this board. lol

Actually I have 12 chars and i've never run out of minutes...and some of them are VERY active....it's all about time management. But I've come close....and what kind of problems are these, then?

Since I'm at school, I tend to log on when I have a free minute...so I'm usually on top of things...but yeah some days I come close.

I still think things would be better if the forum was on a sepparate server!

That would also be twice as expense, as we'd have to support 2 servers.

Hmm I don't think so, there are companies that offer free bulletin boards and the like.... !

If that were possible in this instance, don't you think we'd already be doing it?

Yes - and they have incredibly limited bandwidth - there's no way a forum of this size could work on 'free BBS' sites, which are only usually used to host very small boards.

The board overhead is minor and rarely (in fact never) has been the cause of poor server performance in the last year or so

The flexibilty of running our own board far out weigh any advantages in using a free 3rd party host.
