I am also strongly considering quitting due to recent OOC events.

OOC crap sucks, but it's unavoidable - I've learned to just play as if it doesn't exist, and I'm pretty happy with my head in the sand. I don't talk to others about the game, I don't frequent IRC anymore. Report concerns to the PD, let them handle it, and just putter along willfully oblivious. Otherwise, you'll burn out and quit, come back a year or two afterwards, then rinse repeat forever.

Unfortunately that isn't helpful advice for my situation.

Same here. Besides- if I were to go, I don't think I'd come back. And the situation...well, I don't know if PD cares or not anymore, hence the possible decision. I wouldn't do this rashly, or just because I need a break. There are reasons.

Once you lose faith in the people who run/police the game, the game is never ever going to be fun again. If that's happened, probably better to just cut ties before it seriously starts to bum you out. It's just a game, after all, and there are hundreds of other games around just like it.

I don't know, I lost that faith awhile back, but I still find enjoyment. If they're not doing their jobs I just take effort to remove my character from that situation. (Running, starving, killing-letting go is best sometimes even if it's a character you love, just let go and get away ) we have filters to stop lighting characters etc, and I'd make full use of them to get distance.

I'm talking about those who moderate and staff the game, not irresponsible characters.

So was I. I'm just saying if they don't do their job i just handle the situation by the above means with my character, the only thing i have control over.

Seems a bit extreme way then and makes me wonder why this is the case :/

This. Perfectly said. It's fun to talk OOCly about the game but overall I've found I enjoy the game more when I don't.

There have been times when I've made the OOC decision to remove a char from a situation. Sometimes it's easy to do and other times you have to take drastic measures like letting one of your own chars die.

This is an issue I know a lot of people have had here and it doesn't seem to be improving. Been far too many games run into the ground by uncaring, biased, or irresponsible staff. Used to play MUDs a lot and now I don't because it was so common there. Cantr used to be so much better in that regard, or at least seemed that way, that it was a breath of fresh air. But haven't been able to say that about it for awhile now and it's the one thing dimming my enjoyment of the game, and if I ever quit for good that'll be why :(

Then I am a lucky one, because I have never found myself in such a situation so far. But what kills me now is the lack of time, I seem to be barely able to do all that I should, and there is not much time for Cantr left. I have four characters at present, three of them I wake up only in the evenings for like one or two hours (real hours), and it's really a shame because one of them has potential to be a really enjoyable one, but well... What is worse, I am going to have even less time now. *sigh*

I never had such faith because the staff and I have different goals and ideas of fairness and fun. I can work with them, though. I can work with most things, I think, if I have good enough reason to. My ooc problem has been slowly realizing for years just how extremely counter to the rest of the vocal player base my goals and ideas of fun are.

May I ask what some of these hundreds of other games just like Cantr are and/or where I can find them?

I'm almost surprised none exist. Cantr itself doesn't seem that complex on its most basic level. Just lists of resources and a way to gather them and the things you can make with them. And the talkbox and the notes and the other basic mechanics. Lots of things have been added to it in the years since but the core game has stayed the same. It's the players that inject the life and interest and always has been.

I've had the thought cross my mind recently for various in game events as well as beginning to lose faith in some aspects. I now only stay because the bonds some of my characters have with others keeps me genuinely invested. Even if my play time is limited now with RL things going on I generally only play during down time at work and just occasionally at home.
Oh look, another glorious morning… makes me SICK!
