It's surprising to me how many towns think a 60 year old note listing all the many, many ways they can be dragged off and killed in unfriendly language is a good way to greet a young person. Even when it becomes clear half of them aren't being enforced anymore and most of the people mentioned in it are dead, all that does is make everyone there look lazy.

Fill the hold to the brim with this useless stuff and hope he turns it into a regular route!'

If it was that, but if it's like "Resource X is 2 grams a day, and I only exchange it for tooled rate of resource Y, which is not native to your location, even though I can see that you originally bought resource Y at less than tooled rates because it gets imported from several locations away." To that I say it's not worth it. If my character doesn't care to use it personally and can't sell it to anyone else without repeating the obnoxious rates. Replace resource Y with a local resource and I might consider it.

This thread is for venting about things that annoy us. Am I not allowed to do that? :P I don't have the attitude that my chars own newspawns and often mine encourage others to strike out and seek adventure. Why would I try to cling to a char only to have them sleep or become resentful? As I said, I'd have no complaints if the town was sleepy or ignoring a char. Sometimes it's comical the extremes some chars will go to convince a newspawn to leave with them, but still annoying/frustrating.

Hey, you can vent about newspawns leaving your town. Axiom can vent about the attitude that towns own newspawns. Marian can vent about ridiculous laws. And I'm venting about people who fail economics forever. Everyone's venting here.

I wasn't even venting, just sort of helpfully pointing out one of the little things that a lot of towns don't even seem to realize can contributes to a newspawn taking off. First impressions are important. There's lots of things that I as a player can assume about any given town (no, they probably won't actually drag off and murder any visitors who are asleep on arrival...'), but my character doesn't have that experience, and there have been times I see what might be genuinely new players not even realizing they can work for things they want because there's absolutely no information about it and no one bothers to tell them.

Sure, you're allowed to vent. I wasn't trying to pick a fight. I can understand it's annoying if someone you like leaves, even if they have a good reason for it. I just kinda dislike the attitude of treating people as resources. I mean, they are, but not only that. Not saying you're personally guilty of that attitude, but lots of people are.

People are absolutely resources but they must be carefully cultivated lest they become weeds or just wither away and die. :P
There's always a week or two of hand wringing anytime there's a newspawn, just seeing if they'll fall asleep or exhibit a sudden case of the crazies. The hope is always that they'll stick around long term, but even seeing them leave well equipped and with good thoughts about their spawn town is a victory.

My characters tend to treat newspawns as resources and posessions. It tends to be very clear what I expect and what they get in return. From an OOC time perspective I don't like grooming a person only to have them walk away, but that doesn't happen to me very often. If they don't like the terms then they are free to go where they please.

So in my opinion it's fine, but only if you actually invest in them and include them in your community. If they're the type to sleep for a year and ignore everything and then wake up crying that they have no goals then I'm proud to say that's not my fault.

Having a newspawn immediately after the introduction, given pants and food stage, hop into the workshop. First action, before even starting up a job set up for them? Turn off the radio.

I...... have no words, for how tilted my head is getting. They haven't even pretended to have an IC reason.

Yeah they should've first called it a noise box or some variety of that and be sufficiently confused about what it is. To be fair, if it's on the wiki a character is allowed to know it.

A couple of times in the last week I've been in towns where there aren't tonnes and tonnes of stored resources for newspawns to continually process whilst they sit next to the radio, and some newspawn has stepped up and said "Is there anything I can help with?" and then later "I've finished this, is there anything else I can help with?" Yes, we understand that you like to keep your hands busy, that as a player if you're not contributing in some way you feel like you're not achieving anything. But honestly doing these projects is only making you feel like you're achieving something and if you don't get some goals and show a personality people won't respond to you and you will end up thinking it's a boring town and then you'll sleep.

On a side note, my biggest issue right now is that you all play from the US and gameplay often peaks at 2AM for me.

Must just be where you are. There's a lot of europeans and australians playing (and a couple canadians at least) as well as north americans on midnight shifts!
(Not to mention there's multiple timezones in north america to begin with.)

That just sounds like a worker bee. Not ever character is meant to be a fully developed one...some players are just filling up slots, and they're welcome enough in the towns that need them even if of course someone a little more talkative and driven would be more interesting.

Watch out, being asked to stop kissy smoochie hugging all day in the middle of town can lead to like the Cantr equivalent of road rage.
