Edit: In retrospect, I'm probably breaking the four-day rule, so this post has been redacted.

The way people react to dead characters. Not even just ones who died recently. But it seems like some characters are completely unable to let go of characters belonging to people who stopped playing, no matter how much time passes.

I have a character going through that now. But the fulfilling things in her life have always been the people and relationships. She's rich by most Cantr measures (for a non-town leader), so pursuit of things is unimportant to her. And she's always been a creature of near pure emotion. But her relationships are very important, and when she loses people close to her, it affects her very much. She's in a "family", and it's a rather dysfunctional one at that. So it has left her a damaged soul, and - yes - I RP her that way. She's had several family members and a lover all die in the last 10 years, and - around that time - her father was discovered to be a sexual abuser, though she was never a victim of that. She doesn't understand certain social things, but she just knows that she misses her mother (dead), her sisters who died, and her girlfriend who died. And she misses her father as well, who left town over the whole situation. Her remaining family ignores her, but she does have a supportive boyfriend. She will - at some point - turn the corner emotionally, but for now, she has very convincing IC reasons for her grief.
And while it may be annoying to some, I'm actually enjoying this particular stage of her life. It's allowing me to roleplay the stages of grief, and to do so with a child-like character. She's in the depression stage now, but she will eventually reach acceptance. But with her world being turned basically upside down, it will take time.

That's not really what I meant. Not just the grieving shortly after someone dies. (Although the amount of time Cantrians spend grieving I find... honestly kind of insulting in some ways and disturbing in others. I mean, carrying around someone's corpse for years? It seems like in some ways people forget that Cantr years are 20 days, and still grieving about someone who died ten years ago is not normal or healthy.)
The thing I'm baffling over at the moment is when characters cling to things that once belonged to someone who died RL months or years ago and refuse to let anyone use them.

I don't see anything baffling about that. My mother died over 20 years ago and I still feel that loss. If there was something I treasured of hers that someone else wanted to borrow, you're damn right I'd tell them no. lol

It just gets to ridiculous extremes at times. Like "you can't use that peen hammer because a guy I never even saw speak once touched it!"

I get the feeling you might be exaggerating just a teeny tiny bit there, Kyriel?

I don't see anything wrong with a char hoarding items that belonged to someone special to them, though. One of my chars has carried a particular tool for many many decades as a memento, and would likely beat someone with it before letting them borrow it.
Otherwise, it sounds more like an excuse to not loan out their things. lol Maybe they don't like your char and are being passive-aggressive about it.

I'm pretty sure people who die suddenly of heart attacks IRL are mourned much less dramatically and for a vastly shorter period than in Cantr, even though in the game death by heart attack is as common as a cold.
I think some people just really, really enjoy going all out with the drama there and maybe don't realize how disruptive and annoying it is to other players. Also I think more other characters should overcome their pathological need to be sensitive and polite and just tell them to get the f*** over it already if they're dragging it on too long.

I personally find myself constantly hurting because of it, to be honest. My grandma passed away last year. We sold her car (it was ten years old, and it's not like we were going to have room in the garage to keep it forever, that's silly). We distributed her jewelry to her friends and family. We cleaned out a lot of junk. Sure, I wouldn't give away my grandma's ring or my great-grandma's necklace, but my grandma's frying pan holds considerably less sentimental value to me. It wasn't sudden - we knew it was coming for a long time (much like people in Cantr going to sleep). We cried. We got the body out of the house within a day, not sitting around morbidly moping around it for years. We buried her. We moved on. Life continues.

Somethings just don't heal and they leave their own traces in a way. Maybe as feelings, maybe as an experience of an enjoyable rp or a special bond. I know some characters ( not only mine) are still thinking of their lost family members, lovers and friends and some are mourning just briefly or not minding at all. Cantrians are just unpredictable and they live their emotions in different levels.

I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity.

Still, there's mourning and remembrance and then there's having a complete mental breakdown or spending well over a year as a weepy inconsolable sadsack threatening suicide or cuddling a corpse. I don't know, maybe that does happen occasionally IRL but it's the kind of thing that would put a person in mental institution, or at least remove them from a high ranking government position.

I don't know... in the US we have plenty of people running for high-ranking government positions that should be in a mental institution.

Re: Things that annoy or puzzle you about Cantr
I wonder if the corpse-hoarding would be cut back a lot if Cantrians could have a proper grave site. As it works now, once someone is buried they just disappear into the landscape. Unless you're one of those towns that has 5 screens worth of landmarks acting as gravestones. Maybe chars are reluctant to bury their dead because they then have no specific spot that will remind them of that person or that they could visit.
