The real criminals are a lot more interesting and have years of effort put into them. You wouldn't know about them because that's how successful they are.

What I mean is, people often use the term "newspawn thieves" to refer to anyone in their 20s who is doing something "wrong".

Re: Let's talk about 20-year-olds
I have a character who is a thief. She took an unlocked rickshaw from the sleepy town she spawned in and has been robbing her way across her island. She is very successful, has been pursued several times, has swindled and conned people into helping her, and is again planning to long-con more people. How is she bad for the game? And more to the point, why is it NOT ok for me to use a 20-year-old character to do this, but it is ok for Wiro to use a 40-year-old?

It's all a part of that (again, in my opinion) very interesting culture of ageism in game. And I wouldn't trade it for the world... Though it probably shouldn't be bleeding into OOC like it is.

When you take someone's words out of context and make assumptions on their point of view, you should be prepared not to have your concerns addressed.

Presumably you had to stay in that town long enough to determine it was sleepy, any you're talking about roleplaying and strategy, so that's not a newspawn thief.
It's a pretty specific term! We all seem to be pretty much in agreement about what makes thieves or criminals interesting, I'm not really sure what it is you're arguing about.
I mean, stealing a rickshaw is pretty scrubby, but I guess small time stuff like that is all some characters can aspire too...

If this is addressed at me, I wasn't accusing you of saying it's not ok for me to be a thief. I was asking others in this thread and assuming that you have one of those criminals you mentioned, simply because the tone of your post strongly suggested that.

Not very long actually, though I didn't intend to be a thief. All I did was realize I wouldn't be getting anywhere in that town, took off, robbed the next town I hit without a word, got pursued by a guy on a motorbike who attacked me badly with a sword, escaped him through trickery, convinced the people in the next town that I was the victim, then robbed them after they healed me up, got chased by them, and so-on and so-forth.
My point is that I don't think this character is much different from the grrrrr newspawn thieves that people complain about, but I think I brought content to people's gameplay and gave them an exciting (if fruitless) chase to liven up their RP between extended periods of farming and smelting. And I took their stuff, but what of it?
And yes, actually, this character IS a pretty opportunistic, scrappy, streetwise thief. Big plays and intrigue aren't in her ballpark. Nothing wrong with a small time thief, surely?

Yeah, see... thing is, I actually have seen characters who have been sitting around waiting for an opportunity for game-years derided as "newspawn thieves".

I believe you, there are some pretty dense people out there. But it's hardly the norm, I almost never hear of a person that's been living in town for more than a year or two referred to as a newspawn.

I actually think it's more fun for everyone if you make a big show of it and rub it in (and then proceed to get away anyway), but maybe that's just me. If you have a boat, it's really not hard to evade capture even if people are looking for you.

Honestly my thief LIVES for the chase. I seriously recommend it, as long as you have something faster than a basic bike. Step 1 is to steal a huge amount of healing food in case the pursuers turn out to be competent fighters. There are a ton of tricks I learned very quickly, and the banter you can engage in is fantastic. I think most of yall bash newspawn thieves because the people doing the stealing aren't very good at getting away with it.

Most of mine, but not all... (whistles)

Yes, it's so much more fun when it causes a giant stir. I mean, what are you going to do with a giant pile of resources, look at it? Nothing in this game is really necessary or even very useful once you have enough food, a weapon, and a vehicle, so thieving and pirating is more about the drama and conflict than the loot.

There's a difference on being newspawn thief and a thief. Newspawn thief is person who spawns, steals everything and then just runs away. Usually without no word and only purpose of this char is to annoy other people for their own amusement. Oh yeah and usually seems their players only play this game for 1-2 days and only purpose is just do this. If they survive they end up falling asleep and heart attack follows in next 20 days or so. Usually they end up killed but chase can take days if you are unlucky. It's frustrating then they only "play" for couple of days and just mess around, nothing else
Don't fight a battle if you don't gain anything by winning.
