Maybe your towns stink.

Nothing wrong with expecting a token amount of commitment and helpfulness from a person before just handing them the keys to whatever. I mean, sure, if I had 20 bikes I could just leave them open with the keys inside and let every newspawn drive off without a word of thanks, but I'd much rather make a nice gift of it to a friendly person. Haven't encountered anyone expecting literal years of work for a basic bike in a very long time, though I guess it wouldn't surprise me to hear these kind of people still exist.

Sure, I understand that, but I've run into places that are really miserly and charge non-discounted rates for basic vehicles. I don't really expect people to hand valuable things out to people they just met for free, although I personally would. If I ran a town that had such an enormously excessive amount of wealth that I had 10 more motorcycles than people, yeah, I would totally give them to whoever wanted them for free with no strings attached. First, they're not really "mine" if they just happened to be in a town that I inherited, and second, I probably have way more wealth than I will ever need if I have that many spare vehicles. Why should I hang onto something I have no conceivable use for when someone who might actually use it wants it? I mean, if I have one or two spares, it's reasonable to be a bit more picky, but I've seen towns with lists of 30 vehicles and like five inhabitants.

I feel that people get hung up on being attached to what's "theirs," no matter how tenuous their claim of ownership or how little use they have for it, rather than looking at things in the context of the game as a whole. I think this game is better for everyone when people can travel easily, so I think people should be given vehicles where there's a surplus. Given the huge numbers of abandoned vehicles on the main English-speaking islands, this may well be a perfectly sustainable and reasonable long-term strategy if everyone did it.

But then you run out of free bikes handing them out to barely interactive boring people who for all you know will just fall asleep the next town over. Not that any of my chars have that level of wealth at the moment, but I still like to reserve the cool things for potentially cool people. On a meta level the 'price' is really not the amount of work they do, though in one of my town's that would be HUGELY welcome, but having them hanging around town during that period enriching the place by interacting with everyone.

The towns I've really wanted to leave were the ones that were sleepy to the point of taking a week to nag someone to give me a bucket I'd just finished repairing so I could fetch water, the ones full of people who are really annoying for one reason or another, and the ones where no matter how much you work the ones with the keys to everything still won't let you have even basic tools.

Looks like nearly everyone I've seen on the forums the last few months, hates that crap. Just hope when those damn sleepers who pretend they're contributors not blockages stop getting fed, we remember how much it sucked, to have so much wealth around, and not even pretend to share it, and learn the lessons.

Anyway. My two cents. Stuff the sleepercenters.

As a player, I could just happily sail around filling up the arms of old sleepy people with bones. Sadly none of my characters are with me on this, though they may have indulged in an imaginative scenario or three.

And as much as we're all in contempt of the kind of pirates who kill here on the forum, I bet there's nothing in the world more likely to wake someone who's been ignoring their character ( while inexplicably not handing off their keys... ) then suddenly noticing their char is in the hold of an unfamiliar ship.

Feeding sleepers is against my religion!

EDIT: Also, the characters I've had that did wind up inheriting a lot of wealth have generally been cheerfully sharing it with other young people. Also handing out crowbars to newspawns that want them. That couldn't possibly go wrong in any way.

I've got a char making similar plans with a friend.

It's a simple anti-kidnapping device, I don't see the problem? :P And that screwdriver and those 200 grams off iron could have a variety of perfectly benign uses...

Locks? Oh where we need locks when we can just let piles of stuff behind unlocked doors and unlocked cars and then wonder why they got stolen

Okay new topic: oversexualized descriptions. Does the entire world REALLY need to know at a glance just how kissable your lips are or how tight your butt is? What if the character looking at you isn't even attracted to women? Those would be some awfully odd thoughts for them to be having.

It's the cold war of f-me descriptions. Someone describes themselves as amply curved, or curvaceous, or busty or whatever... And someone else goes - "I can't describe myself as merely curvaceous and full-bosomed, now. Everyone's doing that. That isn't sexy, that's *normal.* I need everyone to know how absolutely sexy my character is, so much sexier than those normal sexy people, just in case I don't convey that through my roleplay like a good roleplayer would instead and let people make up their own minds."

Everyone wants to be unique. There was a MUD I played way back when that had a "seductively-curved woman" on it. How are curves themselves seductive? Seduction is an active state, and physical appearance is passive until coupled with action. I mean, I'm not a dude, but just seeing a pair of tits on National Geographic isn't attractive, right? If you found a pair of synthetic boobs, separate the human body, with some hippy fat thrown in, lying in a box in a medical facility... Not in and of themselves attractive until in motion, until used in a certain manner, right? If the curves themselves were actively seducing, however, then they'd have been actively seducing everything in sight. Her body would have been actively attempting to seduce dogs, cats, children, babies, old men, old women, and rotten toothed lepers with the same passion as her body attempted to seduce young Adonises.

Whenever this discussion comes up, I can't help but quote Tina Fey.

But I think the first real change in women’s body image came when JLo turned it butt-style. That was the first time that having a large-scale situation in the back was part of mainstream American beauty. Girls wanted butts now. Men were free to admit that they had always enjoyed them. And then, what felt like moments later, boom—Beyoncé brought the leg meat. A back porch and thick muscular legs were now widely admired. And from that day forward, women embraced their diversity and realized that all shapes and sizes are beautiful. Ah ha ha. No. I’m totally messing with you. All Beyonce and JLo have done is add to the laundry list of attributes women must have to qualify as beautiful. Now every girl is expected to have Caucasian blue eyes, full Spanish lips, a classic button nose, hairless Asian skin with a California tan, a Jamaican dance hall ass, long Swedish legs, small Japanese feet, the abs of a lesbian gym owner, the hips of a nine-year-old boy, the arms of Michelle Obama, and doll tits. The person closest to actually achieving this look is Kim Kardashian, who, as we know, was made by Russian scientists to sabotage our athletes.
