I rarely OOC, but could you please explain "incorrect OOCing" so I can be sure I don't do it if I ever need to OOC? Thank you! :D

I think they were referring to the "my guy" part, because that's talking out of character. "For me" would be in character.

So much no. I hate when I'm the one to accidentally use it (Cell phones are hard OKAY?!?)

Ugh, this happens to me so much, especially when my character and another are having a lengthy conversation but have nothing to actually talk about so it's mostly smiling and hugging or something, and you can only use so many different smiles and laughs before you're just repeating each other's emotes, unless you have the time to sit and think of something long and riveting to write (which I rarely do but I can't just ignore my characters, especially when they're being addressed, I know if I wait too long to finish my post they might be asleep already).. or I'll be distracted and switching characters a lot (especially on the cell phone yes), and will use my own emote the same way too many times and I hate it so much. I try to use different words as often as I can but when I'm not paying attention I've been caught in that "chuckles", "chuckles again", "chuckles softly", "shakes his head with a soft chuckle" loop and then I read back and realize I used the same emote three or four times and I kick myself. Also when I'm in a hurry and the phone auto-fill-text starts throwing up those "chuckles" like "you use this word a lot, wanna use it some more?!"

Also I hate typos, every time I post I re-read first and I STILL manage to miss some, and then I sit there and seethe because I just want to not look like a moron and here's all these spaces and j's where there should be i's and it's so annoying...

Also I have a character with a seriously bad drawl so basically everything is pronounced and spelled weird, so I have to create phonetically "accurate" words that are misspelled to depict his voice and still make sure there are no extra "typos" because if there is, no one can figure out what he's trying to say, like, it's hard enough already. Same thing with a couple of other characters, one has a natural stutter tic, one has a "broken" voice with a severe stutter because it's physically difficult to make sounds, and one has an odd accent, it's very hard for me to play these characters with consistent speech and it's never exactly the same, I wind up spelling one of their pronunciations different and then try to go along with it like maybe their voice is just changing a bit... and with the stutterers it's hard for me to keep consistent with the words they get better at spitting out and the ones they consistently still have trouble with, I try very hard to focus a character's stutter on specific sounds, like with one they mostly stutter soft consonants and some hard consonants, while the other stutters his vowels, and getting them mixed up irks me to no end..

---

Also I think this should qualify here.. one thing that always makes me cringe and writhe in pain is when you have really good RP with another character, and out of the blue they leave, fall asleep, or simply stop acknowledging your character and refuse to RP anymore even when you try. Like ouch, what happened? You wonder if they're just bored with the town or if they hate your RP personally and are purposely ignoring you. Either way it makes it harder to try RP with every new character, wondering if you're just gonna get cliff-hanged when it seems like things are really interesting, especially when you try really hard to contribute to your half of the RP with any fresh ideas or new actions you can think of to make your character more interesting to the others and it never pans out.

I have a new character who is awake and active and friendly, but everyone in the town refuses to do anything except work or travel or whisper with their lovers. Only one of the characters who initially showed interest in mine even talks to him at all, and it's always the same conversations every day "Good morning", "How are you?" "sleep well".. and my character literally lives for those few lines a day because that's all he'll ever get from these people apparently.

Of the other two, who seemed really into my character, like instant "best friends forever" and all love and cuddles and playing games, one has fallen asleep, I assume permanently, for seemingly no reason, and the other actively ignores my character to the best of her ability, after previously doting on him every day, and only acknowledges him if I make him do something lame and attention-whorish like cry, which I really don't like resorting to, but it's really confusing and I'm not sure how I'm supposed to react in-character (especially with my character having communication issues to boot) because my character isn't going to ignore being ignored (who would?) but they don't have many options and ignoring the other person in return will only make them annoyed, and also it's kind of mean and makes me feel bad for my character, because I spawn them intending for them to be carefree and happy and then all their "friends" treat them crummy or forget about them and then I have a sad character that isn't any fun and never has anyone to talk to. I'm pretty sure I didn't do anything wrong, I try everything I can think of to make interesting RP and my characters constantly try to interact with everyone else, sometimes I don't even have to try, something exciting happens, or dramatic, like violent thieves or animals, but everyone just kind of deals with it as fast as possible and goes back to being quiet, it's really disheartening, and then when I try to RP I just feel dumb because I'm basically playing by myself. Just kind of a mood killer =(

To get back on topic a moment, I just remembered one thing I absolutely cannot stand. *Marian says with a sigh, thinking back on all the times she saw people emoting their thoughts. It seems like this used to be more common but perhaps it was all the same player. Marian also would find it bothersome when people would refer to themselves by name in their own emits*

Getting ignored because of existing relationships is quite common slowly but then again I just keep making new characters till i get a good spot.

I actually played an RP game where the game's rules stated that people needed to us their name in emotes to avoid confusion caused by using pronouns. So I used my characters' names in emotes until I realized that actually bothered people here, mostly out of force of habit from the other RP game I played years ago.

Also in FTO, people tend to use names in emotes, but it's mostly because locations tend to be families where everybody is related to each other, so people very quickly learn each other's names.

Agreed, but I think there is some extent to which this can be pushed - though it is a fine line. Something brief and vague is okay in my books - i.e., eternal darkness before spawning, but going into an actual history "I was a farmer in another life!" or "I am God's right hand" is just dumb.

My favorite recent one:
"Oh, my head! Ugh, the last thing I can remember was some guy handing me a glass saying 'here, try this, you'll like it.'"

I would imagine when I was drunk and tried to play Cantr everyone was cringing pretty hard. xD Note to everyone *never* play Cantr when you're drinking. I eventually gave up and went to bed. lol Not before I ruined my characters life mind you. o.O

When someone uses an instrument in-game and doesn't explain the sound in any way. This might just be a strong bias because I'm a music major, but there are so many ways to describe music! Even a person with no musical background can explain what they hear to an extent.

I'd be interested in an example of this. This could help with my RP. :D

I'm glad that you asked! Here are some resources:

http://www.macmillandictionary.com/us/t ... nstruments
-This is a list of a few common musical terms and how they are used.

http://schoolworkhelper.net/timbre-qual ... scribe-it/
-This focuses specifically on how to describe timbre, which can be thought of as the exact "color" of the sound. Very important if you want to convey meaning with music.

There are loads of other things that you can describe as well, like the amount of texture (Is it just one line of music, or are there multiple lines layered together?). You can add slight hesitations in the sound to signify a specific moment, etc. etc. Guitarists and other players of string instruments can add a sustained effect very carefully if they do not damper strings between notes. There are loads of other things that can happen as well. The bottom line is, even if the terminology used isn't correct when someone roleplays playing an instrument, it still impresses me immensely when they try.

Interesting. I'll look into that.
