Donation Drive?!

Postby returner » Sun Apr 05, 2015 11:16 am

So I was checking out the published financial records of Cantr, and we've been running at a loss for a while, which sucks - particularly for Jos, who has to foot the bill.

In the 10 or so years I've been here, I remember a couple of threads suggesting that people have some kind of donator flair, if they choose to. It's been shot down several times.

Instead, how about, if you do make a donation - you just mention it here. It's not a bad thing to let everyone know you're supporting Cantr. It's actually a great thing - it shows other players that it's not unusual to donate, and it makes you feel good.

As it stands, we'd need just 5 to 10 players to contribute $20 per month to get Cantr back in the black! And if we go over, it helps cover future costs.

Is Cantr worth $20 a month to you?

Let's do it! DONATION DRIVE!

(and yes I have set up a $20 per month donation to begin with :P)

I don't use paypal so I bought a paypal ininal card just to donate Cantr, but I couldn't feel so safe with activating it. But I heard it can be added to normal paypal account and I'm hoping to get help from a friend. If I can recharge it myself I'd like to donate regularly even though not as an auto payment.
I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity.

If you have a debit or credit card with Visa/Mastercard etc, you don't need to use PayPal to donate. They do require that you make an account, but it's literally one page with a few details about you and your card details. You set a password so you can log in and cancel the subscription anytime.

I don't use PayPal either. But your issue is symptomatic of a deeper issue - that PayPal presents quite a barrier to donations. In the past, even I have neglected to donate because of my multi-faceted dislike of PayPal (I could write an essay, as could many others, about why I hate PayPal).

I'm thinking something like https://www.patreon.com/ or just any other service at all that offers subscription donations.

I've refused to use PayPal for the last 10 years or so because of reasons, but considering how many years I've played Cantr I probably should get around to donating at some point.

I'm to cheap/poor to commit to a monthly thing but I'm sure I could manage a one-time donation now and then.

Often people will play Cantr because it's a free and provides huge amounts of entertainment... No one should feel obliged to donate, nor peer pressured into, if you're financially unable to.

I should be donating a lot more than I am, to be honest. But when I played when I was younger, there really was no way for me to.

I may donate to Cantr, I may not. It's no one's business but mine and Jos's.

It's nice to see players are donating, but I prefer to not know who exactly.
GAB has currently no idea who is contributing and how much and I prefer to keep it like that.

Cantr is 100% free and donations should have absolutely no effect on processing player-related cases. Not knowing about donations is the most effective way to be trusted it really isn't :)

Good for you, glad to have someone so modest and opaque! I'm sure you realised this, but the intention of the thread is not to expose who donates and who doesn't (because very few do according to Cantr statistics), but rather to drive awareness that a) Cantr income is currently low and b) the Donate button is just a click away.

No worries Greek, in that case I'd recommend steering clear of this thread. :D I am hoping to at least remind people that the option to donate is there. Sometimes it's easy to put it at the back of your mind and forget, thus me making this thread.

$3000 to make all returner's characters much weaker than average and permanently lock the line 'has an embarrassingly small penis' somewhere into their descriptions.

Yes, even if they're female.

I'll pitch in $50 to this.

I like that there's the poll option there, it satisfies Greek's concerns, since people can admit to donating or not donating through an anonymous poll submission, rather than a comment.

Not willing to donate right now. This is a very political matter though, you see, there comes a time when money does matter and these are one of those times. You have to do what your investors want or what would be investors want, whatever makes enough money to keep the game alive. Like I said, I'd be willing to donate if enough changes to the game were implemented to keep me and a base of other players here and not leaving. That's all you need is a base and then you can grow that base. As is the base is too small to sustain a living breathing world such as Cantr. Grow the base and save the game.

I've been advertising enough to know why we aren't getting new players and all the complaints are identical if not exactly the same. Fix that and this games player base will explode, first the road length needs a revamp. I suggest making it a max of 4 ticks for walking and a min of 2 ticks for walking. vehicles (depending on type) will have to be adjusted.

The other option is put exhaustion to good use. Hit the end of the a road (depending on the length) it will hit your tiredness. Can't hit the road again until it's lowered. Vehicles of different assortments tire you less than walking. This would make the ticks not needed and instead use the ticks primarily for simulation of walkers getting to said location slower than people on vehicles. That would significantly speed things up, keep vehicles from becoming useless and be far more enthralling without losing the immersion.
