Umm... Have any of you people ever actually used some of these swords? Using a wooden handle for a big sword is stupidly impractical - it is not just for absorbing shock, but for aiding grip. Believe me when I say you do not want to be disarmed in combat...

Anyway, stop moaning about this. There are far more irritating features that err from RL. This is at least pretty soundly based on fact.

Note: I should also mention the importance of a martingale (a loop of leather) in preventing disarmament. All in all, leather rocks.

leather is not that easy to get... Well, at least salt isn't...

I'd love to see diamond-encrusted hilts... :)

Leather's only hard to get in certain areas. Just like iron and steel are. If you can get steel but not leather, then you are just plain unlucky...

Well, that lack of luck is based on factors outside the game...because if I was a Cantrian weapon smith and had access to steel but not leather, I would find another material suitable for the hilt. Sure, pure wood wasn't perhaps the best suggestion, but cotton cloth, hemp cloth or simply raw hide should work.

We have a variety of bowstrings. Hemp, silk and cotton. All work (as far as I know)

How is the component breakdown of swords different from the component breakdown of bows?

In other words: Why can't we have a variety of hilts?

I still want to promote trade, but why not a variety of trade?

Bowstring is done in this way because all three types (cotton, hemp, silk) don't exist together on one island but each island has at least one source. There is a way around the programming but this makes us have to create three objects in order for this to work.

Now the problem with hilts are that they are already divided up by three sizes (large, medium, and small). Now if we were to break that down further into hilt covered by cotton cloth, hemp cloth, raw hide, rubber etc... That would lead to literally two dozen new objects in the database which is something that programming doesn't want us to do.

The other problem is that currently there is no way to determine which material used is better. Raw hide would be easier to obtain than cured leather but raw hide in reality would not last as long as cured leather. The same goes for cotton, hemp, or rubber. In reality rubber would probably be the best shock absorber than leather but rubber doesn't exist on every island and for the islands that do have rubber it is still as rare as salt. Also, in the future rubber will have to manufactured like steel and iron.

There could be hilts and other parts of weapons that are adorned with diamonds, gold or other precious materials...making them stand out from the general weapons. A well known fighter or an emperor would probably want a nice weapon to show off :)

Agreed but until there is an easier way for us to do this in the database as well as deterioration(sp?) of materials for example a bone hilt will most likely break under the strain rather than a steel hilt or an iron hilt.

That is something that you will have to find out on your own. But just because an ingame map claims it doesn't exist doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Barring strange happenings, I will finish my first editoin tommorrow (or as soon as I get the html from programming....) Then I will begin my scouring quest of the island to find a source of string. Mark my words: It will be found out, and reckoning will come.

Gimme a month or so. I'm on foot here people.

I wonder if it could be on a small island off the coast.

the solution i see to this is is make the hilt rap one componet and the hilt a difrent componet. make the rap one size fits all, you can alwas cut the extra off after you are done rapping the hilt.

The other problem is that currently there is no way to determine which material used is better.

As for this a sowrd with a hide rap could do slightly less damage because you could not swing it as har as one with a leather rap.

just my thoughts
