How often do your characters travel?

Just something I'm curious about.

I know we have these characters that will hop on a motorcycle and zip clear to the other side of an island at the drop of a hat, or sail back and forth between several like it ain't no thang, but then again it seems disturbingly common to find these towns where you can ask about a spot two locations down the road and it might as well be the darkest heart of Africa for all anyone can tell you about it. It's like, 'We've lived here for decades, and we've heard rumors from a traveler in the ancient past of people living there, but truly it's a mystery because it's not like I'm going to hop onto one of my bikes and make the four hour round trip to ever check it out.'

Is the idea of regular trade or alliances or any sort of war really so dead in this game that town leaders can't even be bothered to learn about their immediate neighbors half the time?

As for myself, I'm really trying hard to break my stay at home habits lately. (It helps that all four of my characters spawned in towns where the older folks were either sleepy and neglectful or extremely overbearing....) I've never in all my time playing had a character sail from one island to another and that especially is something I'm hoping to pull off this time.

7/8 of mine have travelled now. One has only gone on one trip, another only on 2 trips plus a couple of brief visits to a town 'next door'. One has travelled across the island they're on (and back) about 3 times, with a different detour on the way back each time. Another travelled halfway around the island they spawned on (some of which was against their will) then across the seas. One has travelled around about half of their island, either to visit people or gather resources and will be very likely to travel around more of it in the future. One has sailed around their local area loads. The other has visited all other towns on their island, but there's not many, so...and they tend to be only short trips, far between, because they're too busy leading their town

1 - used to take frequent resource runs mostly because his girlfriend couldn't stand the town they lived in. They later moved to the other side of the island and both died there.
2 - spent most of her first ten years of life lost in the mountains/forest, and hated to leave her hometown ever since. She died there.
3 - goes wherever she's told to go.
4 - hasn't seen her spawntown in decades. She's been sailing around neighboring islands, when in port she usually prefers to stay in one place.
5 - travelled all over the place before going to Sanctum and then never leaving Sanctum. She died there.
6 - used to take frequent resource runs but now never leaves town. His job is to feed the sleepers and the horde of animals.
7 - travelled to the neighboring towns for various reasons, not too frequently but often enough.
8 - mostly stayed in one place.
9 - sails anywhere and everywhere
10 - stays home
11 - went from Teregotha to Treefeather. She was supposed to be something of a cartographer (after having what she would have called a bad experience in Shai) but I forgot about her and she died.
12 - moved somewhere and died young.
13 - she moved from her spawntown the day she spawned, and from then she only ever occasionally took trips to the neighboring town, before moving to said neighboring town, and then died there.
14 - mostly stays in one place but isn't afraid to go somewhere else
15 - has never left her spawntown
16 - goes where her companion takes her

1. Visited many towns on his spawn island before he died, never stayed anywhere long
2. Has spent most of her life travelling, and is the only one of my characters to have visited more than one island, but has mostly settled down now
3. Went on a brief trip halfway across his spawn island shortly before he died
4. Has travelled for resources and trade - it's not a big deal for the people of his town to make a quick trip to visit the neighbours
5. Is returning from her first trip away from home with no plans to repeat
7. Wants to go to all the places but hasn't yet left his spawntown

1. Spends more time sailing than in towns. It has always been like this.

2. Hardly ever gets to travel, because she can't find anybody to cover for her back home.

3. Has spent most of her life traveling and intends to visit every island in the world. If you're in a coastal location, there's a good chance you've run into her.

4. Spends most of his time sailing between Cantr, Treefeather and Shai island. Has never been further than that. Actually has never even been to half of Treefeather, come to think of it.

5. Spent her youth on a single island, traveling between a few locations but mostly staying put, mainly alternating between 3 to 5 locations. Now sailing because she couldn't tolerate the island anymore.

6. Used to travel in her youth, but now stays in a single town because the town leader is in the same situation as my #2 and needs company.

7. Used to travel in his youth, then became unable to travel for a few years. Now traveling again after years.

8. Has traveled quite a bit within a single island, but never left the mapped region. Has also spent some time staying put in a couple of locations.

9. Spawned in location 1, moved to location 2, frequently visits locations 3, 4 and 5 and occasionally 1. Has been to another island once.

10. Mainly stays in one location because he's illiterate and can't read maps. Occasionally visits nearby locations he has memorized, but is likely to get lost if he travels further without company.

11. Has traveled a couple of times in her life but mostly stays put. She's also illiterate.

12. Mostly stays in one location but has traveled to nearby locations a few times.

13. Has traveled quite a bit within a single island. Spawned in place A, was forced to relocate to place B, then went on a trip and hasn't come back yet.

Finnish:

1. Has traveled widely within one island but has never seen the sea. Has mapped 135 locations.

2. Has mapped 36 locations on trip 1 and 91 locations on trip 2, not to mention visiting locations mapped by other people.

Wow, sounds like everyone on the forums really likes to travel then, though I'm not sure what percentage of the actual players we represent.

Maybe I just have had bad luck in the towns I talk to. Kind of annoying though when a lot of the time I already know the answer OOC and am just trying to get an IC confirmation.

1. Now deceased. Stayed at home, wound up traveling, having an adventure but losing everyone and spending ten years in prison, then stayed at home all alone and refused to leave out of fear and paranoia, except one time in an attempt to be social, he visited people just next door to his town. Had a nice time and smiled again, went back home and was murdered soon after, in a van being dragged from his home so technically, while traveling.
2. Started off with no desire to travel, forced to run away from home, but now has been to ten islands and met people from at least four languages, and plans to explore the entire charted - and uncharted - world.
3. Rarely travels, only to the fair in the next town or if he absolutely has to, but probably wouldn't be against hopping in his truck and exploring just for the hell of it.
4. Afraid to leave town unattended (leader), has only left three times, once to the beach for an hour to see what it looked like, and twice to a nearby town very briefly to collect a friend's things after he died and left everything to her in his will. Conatantly gets put down for her fear of abandoning her town and it's become such an issue she's afraid she might lose her lover over it.
5. Left original spawn town for current town (one town over) only because they were all dying and told her to leave and save herself, on rare occasions travels to the forest one town away, only with an escort (blind, can't drive).
6. Used to travel to two neighboring towns to deliver food when younger, once went on a trip in a boat because his boyfriend wanted to and then boyfriend suddenly wanted to go home so it didn't last long.
7. Used to travel between her three towns and their sister town frequently for trade and mostly maintenance, now has trouble getting around due to physical issues.
8. Started off life as a sailor but wasn't cut out for it, lost all friends and returned to spawntown, leaves home very rarely and has to have someone with him (can't drive, never learned), and scared of large vehicles and loud noises, makes it difficult.
9. Has traveled but not very far, furthest was to escort a banished guy far enough he couldn't walk back to town. Doesn't travel much out of depression and a phobia of new people being bullies.
10. Afraid to leave town unattended (leader) mostly because coastal and was attacked by raiders before mine settled there. Also has bad memory and map skills, gets lost easily. Does occasionally leave town to fetch things desperately needed though prefers to have traders bring it.
11. Traveled with a group from his island to another in a slow ship and made it back with much needed resources, occasionally travels to towns to gather needed resources.
12. Hasn't traveled much, only between his spawntown and neighboring town to see friends who live there.
13. Planned to travel since spawning in Polish town, found new home and now plans to travel for trade and exploration to help his town and get rich himself, hopefully.
14. Has been traveling for a few years on an expedition, not taking it too well physically but getting used to it.
15. Still young, hasn't had a change to travel, but would if a friend was going, though it would be hard as he has kind of severe agoraphobia and gets spooked easily.

I have only one character that was nomadic, but has decided to settle down after unfortunate circumstances turned into very fortunate circumstances.

Every single char I ever had has traveled.
Some were moving; some trading; some exploring;... they have all left their spawntown, though not always permanently.

For my living characters -

1. Left his spawn island in his mid-twenties and travelled a lot around at least two other islands, before eventually settling down about twenty or thirty Cantr years ago in a big town on the coast. Since then has travelled locally, but has no plans for any long distance travelling anytime soon.

2. The town moved from his spawn island back to their group's original island at least fifty Cantr years ago, and apart from some inland travelling, he's mostly stayed in their current location. Also has no plans for any long distance travelling soon.

3. Another who left his home island, joining a group of pirates before eventually the group disbanded. Now travels on a boat with his love and some friends.

4. Has spent all of his life working in his spawn town, and has plans to travel with his girlfriend.

5. He and his friends left their home island, most likely for good, and are sailing quite far away from it.

6. Left his spawn island and sailed to the neighbouring one, where he fell in love and is now preparing for a trip on his boat.

7. Has travelled around much of his spawn island, but has never sailed, just travelled via car.

8. Helped people in her spawn town escape a threat and now helping a friend settle a new town on a distant island.

9. Has barely left her spawn town.

10. Worked for a few years at things he wasn't brilliant at before joining a crew to sail to distant islands.

11. Has only travelled around a small part of his spawn island, almost entirely on foot apart from when he stole a ship in order to cross a lake. He spent some years in prison but now lives in his adopted town.

12. Spawned on a small, almost empty island where he was going to join a crew before one of them stole the ship. He then crossed the island on a rickshaw to get help, but the crew captain died and the ship was never recovered, so he stayed in the town he went to for help.

4- Used to travel all the time by car. Now only twice since she moved to her new home.

6 - Has been sailing most her life.

8 - Trader for town, travels by sea when needed

10 - Only travels during warmer weather, and only if she's asked to go
11 - Never stays too long in one place. Foot > Motorcycle > Pickup > Raker

13 - Hasn't left her home in years, probably won't ever again
14 - Sailing occasionally
15 - Prefers to travel on land, hates sailing
