Re: Things that annoy or puzzle you about Cantr
This doesn't annoy me so much as make me sad: when either IC or on the forums, you've heard for a long time about certain characters or locations and how great their RP is or all these adventures they've had, and then when you finally get a chance to meet them they're just these boring, mostly unresponsive old people who only wake up to be grumpy and negative at the more active people and shut down any attempts anyone else makes at getting anything interesting done.
It's like...damn, you've lived this full, amazing life, only for it to come to this?
e: Reading this it could almost be applied to RL as well, but unlike humans, Cantrians only get stronger and wealthier and more awesome as they age and thus have no excuse.

Actually...
I don't know if this applies (or, rather, would hypothetically apply) to dragons or not, but Cantrians do suffer the same let downs and losses and traumas as earthing humans. Arguably more or less depending on which parts of the worlds you compare. And while their bodies and resources only improve with age, their thoughts and feelings are not so immune to the ravages of time. I think there's only so many people in any world can keep from becoming a boring old cynic for that long. It can be done and we all wish it would be done more often, but they aren't without excuse when it happens.

^^^wow, that brings back some memories
Maybe they gain the soul of a cranky old dragon when they get older. I really like this, it would explain so much!

From Seko's thread Character real age vs visual age:
It really does explain a lot, doesn't it? Cantrians are humanoid dragons; it's perfect.
Joshuamonkey wrote:I guess Cantr characters are like dragons. They just get more and more powerful, and gather more and more wealth.

IF and I mean IF, you spawn a character that doesn't talk about gods, mice in moons, have 14 legs, have a backstory that would fill a lifetime at the age of 20 days and a second... IF all that would happen, and you started your life with "Hi what can I do to help around here", I BET! I really BET! That you would be part of the community and you would get to share these "hoards" of treasure everyone keeps talking about.

You mean win their trust before stabbing them in the back yelling about four-headed mouse gods on the moon? That's a great idea!

What, you mean you can't be a religious person with 14 legs and still get a job? Wow, that's discrimination on so many levels. When are Cantrians going to discover equal opportunity laws?
There are still people spawning with backstories, though? Ugh.
But I've literally run into situations where after several days you can be like, 'May I please get some steel so that I may make a tool that will allow me to gather a nearby resource several people could use?' and people will straight up refuse to help you because going on a gathering trip is 'running off on them' and ugh, how ungrateful you disgusting newspawn, now why don't you get to sharpening these 21 old tools I just pulled out of storage and no you can't have one.

I had a character allowed off alone on a resources trip that was estimated at requiring ten years, when she was barely over a year old. Granted they only gave her a rickshaw when they had plenty of better vehicles hanging around, but that's quite a lot of freedom and they were hardly getting enough newspawns that they could afford to throw them away (she returned to find everyone but the town leader abandoned or dead
).

Re: Things that annoy or puzzle you about Cantr
^^^ the saddest story.
But hey, free rickshaw! Kudos to that town, I wish more would be willing to take chances like that. (But ten years? What island was this?)
And yes, it's been my experience that workers who are content to sit quiet and ignored in a workshop for years might be useful for a leader, but they're worryingly difficult to tell apart from workers who will sit there ignored and inwardly seething until they finally snap.
And of course in the meantime, neither one makes for much of a town.
I've also noticed the atmosphere of the game these last few years has shifted quite a bit...it used to be a sure path to success to start a character with some variation of 'hi I'm new can I have a job', but now four out of five times that kind of character just gets ignored because there are no jobs, once a town gets established to a certain point it has everything it needs. Even the leaders don't bother working...at that point in the town's 'evolutionary stage' the only reason to be there is the RP. Which is why you wind up with four mutes and two blind girls and someone who acts like a toddler and a guy trying to start a radical new religion and another who thinks he's a dog. And some ladies spawned to be what I will just call 'girlfriend material' since what I actually call them in my head might be offensive to some. These people will generally be adored and coddled and given things while the rare person wanting to do useful things for the town continues to be completely ignored.
...I think I've looped right back around to 'things that puzzle and annoy you about Cantr societies'.
e: just a little tangent I went on. Of course it's a silly example...I mean a town with eight active RPers? Does such a thing even exist? But my point is, when there's absolutely no direction from more established characters and nothing else going on, your choices are to either make your own fun, walk off, or just join the ranks of the starving sleepers. Most people choose some combination of the latter two, so I don't really mind the first as much as it may seem, no matter how much I rant about it on the forums.

SCARY how I know of a town like this, and it reminds me of a place I passed through irl too, and it was maddening. I was glad to never live there. Talk about small town!

...and frustrated, which is way worse than ignored. I fully agree with your post, so sad and so true. "Nah, we don't need anything, but if you're really bored I'll do you a favor and allow you to sharpen those 15 crumbling bone knives over there". It's discouraging.
What I've noticed lately is a total lack of "normal" characters. No that it annoys me, as I care less and less as time goes by, but it puzzles me. I don't know if it's because people love the so called quirky characters or because they want to be so distinct that they overdo it (for my likes, I guess it's not overdone in their players' perspective), but most of the characters I see around lately are really "caricaturesque".

One with mostly unmade roads >_> Probably why she got the rickshaw since there was only one pickup and one tandem. It took eight and a half years in the end, and would have been a lot faster were it not for the lack of good gathering tools and the presence of many bears and wolves.
Most of my characters are pretty normal or at least likely come across as such. I play one character with a disability and a 'personality disorder', the latter of which I don't think anyone's much noticed (though I suspect that's because the players are attributing it to me, not my character), and one character with a persistent but not overwhelming delusion, the other two are 'normal'. All three of my dead characters started off fairly unremarkable even if some were rather odd by the time they died.
I don't mind strange characters but it annoys me when someone spawns with a disability or significant quirk, RPs it intensely for a day or two then falls asleep and dies. I was sort of afraid when I first spawned my disabled character that I'd end up falling into that category but I've not had any trouble keeping both the character and the disability going.
