Confusing place names?

Postby Lumera » Fri Oct 22, 2004 5:05 pm

Okay, am I the only one that has trouble keeping track of the difference between Whatevertown, Whatevertown (west), and Whatevertown (north).

For some reason I always forget that last part, and I think it would be easier to remember a name like Northern or Western Whatevertown, etc.

Of course, I realize even if anyone agrees with this it would probably be too much of a hassle to change the existing names, but maybe it's something whoever's in charge of that stuff could consider when making new places?

For those towns, I do remember them as Northern Djorf Hills, at times. It doesn't really matter what it says on the location, I've heard slight dereratives of quite a few cities. Like SF for Seatown Forest, Lad for Ladvicitavoi, etc.

Try Aki Island - each place seems to have a three-word name... and I THINK some part of the name means where it might be related to somewhere else, but I've not worked it out.

Or the Pok Mountain Chain....

They are confusing to me....

Try Pok Southern Mountains (north)

The most confusing part is that the Pok Southern Mountains are to the east of the Pok Mountains, not south. That tripped me up the first time I went through there.

I forget sometimes too, but an experienced traveller should write down these names and make a little map for himself (unless provided with one).

You can go wrong IRL, so it is rather good that it is the way it is...

I would like to be able to rename places though...

In Character I always said the northern part of Drojf Hills. I never called it Drojf Hills (North) because in real life who says that. The North, South, East, West thing I believe is jsut to add more locations so you don't spend 20 years travelling through Pok Desert. Could you imagine that?

My understanding is that there are little signs of some sort that label the areas. Why else would everyone call things the same thing?
Besides, I'm not so sure North means anything to Cantrians.

Compass directions are used in ship navigation. Also, on a road, you are given the direction people are walking in compass terms. North clearly has meaning.
