My best friend and I coordinated unknowingly. She is going as a witch and I'm a black cat. I have poked my finger about 10 times sewing this damn tail. But thankfully I only had to make the tail and the parts that go around my arms. The leggings and ears came premade. I just couldn't find anything for my arms or a tail. Oh, and I conned her into making my arm bands last night. Would have done the tail too, had I not needed to sleep for work and it wasnt 1am.

And now the whole costume is pointless, since my best friends husband is being a jerkwad. (Yeah.. Not what I want to say, but it suffices for now) and claims she cant use her car to go, they arent a taxi. Yet all I want to remind him of all the times I have taken him then 5 blocks to his job, or picked him up. -_-

I really hate people today..

The American flag is the third oldest flag in the world. Just found this out. The other two are Denmark and Austria. Okay, those two are fine. But the fact we're the third oldest makes me want to jump off a building. The great irony within the fact we're one of the youngest nations in the world but we have the third oldest flag is a bit too much for me to handle. Honestly, thought it was a lie, but I guess not. If this was a Cantr situation then I would be bothered by it so much I would probably just stop playing for a while.

No idea why that bothers me, but it really, really, really, really bothers me. :?

JSWill... I can't explain why this bothers you so much, but I'm also not sure the that the information you're reacting to is correct, other than in a kind of hyper-technical sense.

The flag of the United States itself has changed at lot, after all. It originally had thirteen stars, now has fifty, and in between it changed 26 times -- if not every time a new state was added, then still, plenty of times.

But OK, I'll grant you that the *design* of the flag has stayed roughly the same for a relatively long time as these things go. But several other countries (in addition to Denmark and Austria) have flags whose basic design hasn't changed a lot in at least as long, sometimes longer.

The flag of the Netherlands have been in use since 1572. It's the oldest tricolor flag still in use. But its designation as the *official* flag of the Netherlands by the government didn't come until 1937, during a time of nationalist pride prompted by the rise and threat of the Nazi state in Germany. Does this mean that it wasn't the *real* flag of the Netherlands before 1937? Not really... it was already used by the navy, the government, etc.

The United Kingdom's flag was designed in 1606 and adopted in 1707, but didn't become the official Union Jack that it is today until 1801, the addition of Ireland to the UK, when they added a few new red stripes to it.

Russia is using the same flag that it used unofficially from 1668 until 1917... its use was interrupted during the Soviet years although was still the symbol of the Russian Republic within the USSR, and then was readopted by the newly independent Russia in 1994.

All this gets to the fact that flags are political things, and governments & political situations change a lot.

China's recorded history is over 5000 years old, but its government dates back only to 1949.

India's history is as long or longer, but it's only existed as a nation state since 1948.

Germany and Italy didn't exist as "countries" until the late nineteenth centuries... doesn't mean they don't have long, rich, millenia-old histories, but it does mean that their existence as nation states dates from a much more recent time period.

So many other countries are younger, from a political perspective. The nineteenth and twentieth centuries were politically rather tumultuous ones all over the world. New countries were created all the time, their governments changed frequently.

Even France, with its relatively 'old' history, refers to its current government as the 'Fifth' Republic... the fifth one in the last 225 years, the same amount of time the U.S. has operated under one constitution (and even that, only if you don't count the Civil War years, when several of the states flew the Flag of the Confederacy under a different government).

Anyway, not sure this will help you deal with whatever's bothering you about it, but in case.

I have to confess that your annoyance made me curious, JsWill.

As Saztronic said, the adoption of a flag is a political and administrative issue, and the older a community is, the more likely it is that it has gone through lots of changes when it comes to government and administration and I find the concept "young nation" a bit deceiving in that aspect (again, Saztronic made two great examples with Germany and Italy, which are technically young countries but hardly could be labelled as that). For instance and for using an example that comes handy to me, Spain's most ancient city was founded by the Phoenician in the year 1100 b.C. and they already referred to the peninsula as Hispania then (which comes from the Phoenician i-span-ya). And even if nowadays the territory is pretty much the same (after conquering and losing some territories here and there) and the country still holds the name (Hispania > España) it was divided in several kingdoms for centuries. The current flag was legally adopted in 1981 but the design is back from 1785 and only changed between 1931 and 1939 when the Republican flag was adopted.

The Republic of Malt achieved its independency in 1964 and still the design of its flag comes from the year 1130.

I'm not fully sure about this, but I believe that Belgium's flag hasn't changed its design since 1830 or somewhere near to that year, when they picked the colours of the Duchy of Brabant where the Belgian Revolution started and added the red stripe to symbolize the blood spilled during the uprising.

Sweden legally adopted its flag in the XX century, but the flag itself comes from the XVI century.

Again, I am really, really curious about what did bother you about that matter! :)

So I've been inactive wooooo.

I blame it on first my phone charger dying on me when my phone had 2% battery... didn't have that for a few days. I got a new charger today so that's all better.
Then Chrome decides to flip out on me and crash every time I try to open it. So now I'm back to using Internet Explorer and Firefox. IE is actually not that bad, probably because it's Windows 8.1 fresh and hasn't accumulated too much spam yet. Firefox on the other hand is a pain because for some reason it wouldn't import all of my settings/bookmarks from Chrome, plus I still have to install all the add-ons including Flash. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm preferring IE right now.

I'd rather Chrome worked again, but meh.
