Honestly, the thing that irks me most about this one are the freakin' dots in between every thing -.-

Me too, that made it really hard to read the description >__< I always read the ellipses as pauses and interruptions because I use those a lot in the proper way but why would anyone use ellipses like that in a description? You can't really grasp the description. At least I can't, it makes it frustrating, and makes no sense in that context.

Aging in my (living) characters:

183: Balding, wrinkles in the face but no signs of aging in the body.
170: Hair color turned lighter, I imagine her looking like she's in her 60s; height has never been affected by aging.
147: Gray hair; wrinkly face, elbows and knuckles.
117: Description generally hasn't been changed much ever since he spawned, but I imagine his hair has gotten lighter. He has gotten fat around the waist and in the cheeks.
104: Has some white hairs but otherwise looks and acts youthful. In drawings I tend to draw her with gray hair nowadays, but I haven't updated the description.
72: Showing early signs of balding and wrinkles.
71: Looks like she's in her sixties. For a long time she didn't age, but then aged more rapidly due to grief.
65: She aged prematurely in terms of wrinkles, but then the development stopped and she currently looks a few years younger than she actually is.

Age means very little to me in Cantr, especially when it comes to appearance. Chars can easily live well past 100 and their strength can only increase. It doesn't make sense for everyone to have frail, wrinkled and stooped people hobbling around. Considering they have (at this point) an infinite lifespan, I'd expect they don't show signs of old age even at 150.

I feel the same way, for me, characters age through experience, not physical age. I have characters who still act and look 20 because their life hasn't worn them down and trampled them. I have characters who I simply enjoyed as a cutie and chose not to age them and lose the cuteness, I've had characters throw their back out, develop limps from injuries that never go away, I've had gray hairs show, or characters have memory lapses, or the cold hurts their bones. It all depends on the character. If it's one I feel is no fun if they're old, I'm not gonna roleplay the aging process and make the character not fun for myself, but if I feel acharacter has a life that's fun to develop in ways like aging, sickness, etc., I'll have it happen.

I couldn't agree more. You're only as old as you feel. I always took age as a "sense" other characters have, and any age after 89 just can't be distinguished by that sense any longer, not a reflection of physical appearance.

I tend to not change my character's apppearances a lot -

88 years old - Still looks like he did when he was 20, but he is thin and pale.
88 years old - Still looks like he did when he was 20.
88 - Still looks mostly like he did when he was 20, but his description says that he has looks like he hasdone a lot of manual labour in his life.
82 - Described as appearing about 65 years of age, mainly because I haven't changed it for nearly 20 Cantr years.
82 - Still looks like he did when he was 20.
61 - Not much detail is given about his appearance, so he could easily look any age, although his hair is still brown.
56 - Still looks she did when she was 20.
51 - Is more toned than he was when he was 20, and so looks younger than he is.
38 - Looks his age.
34 - Looks his age.
28 - Looks his age.

I've only added some grey hairs as a result of emotional trauma.

That isn't true. I've seen women have less than attractive descriptions. I even play one that is over weight. She is still pretty but she doesn't have an hour glass figure or even one similar to Olive Oyl, with or without large breasts she wouldn't be able to hold up well without severe back issues.

The odd thing is that beauty in real life is often noticed by how much it stands out from the way "normal" women or men look. In Cantr you could argue that it is exactly those that we call non-attractive that are good-looking, and I think that's beautiful. <3

I do not describe with subjective adjectives right now. I think the only character I ever called "beautiful" was Chee and she's dead now, and that was also only in the beginning.

Of all of my dead characters:
Two of them were old enough to age but didn't, apart from the fact that they slept to death.
Two of them aged considerably before they died.
Four of them died too young to really age.

Of my living ones:
One looks about how she did when she spawned. She's fat so wrinkles don't really have a chance to form, but I bet if she lost weight she'd be a wrinkly old hag.
Three of them need to age, one especially.
One of them has only gotten thinner and I should probably add some wrinkles and gray hairs but at least she has aged.
One will probably never age because I love her current description too much. XD
And one is in her twenties.

Actually, I've deliberately RPd that. Somebody with a flat figure and a long face would be considered beautiful. Men are a bit more diverse, though it's starting to seem split between the bodybuilders and the stereotypical massless dorks. The occasional eccentric gets all the attention, then?

For my chars it's the others' personality what draws them in. I don't mind how many times the word "attractive" or "beautiful" is used on a description, if I don't find the character interesting, it's more likely that all those stunning atributes will go unnoticed. Plus, I don't like subjective terms in descriptions, the way some physiognomies are described cast in my mind (or in my characters minds, we don't always share the same taste) something that is far from good looking, no matter how many times the description says the character looks dazzling and everyone around should die drowned in pools of drool just at their sight. Godmodding descriptions usually lead me to an initial dislike in most cases.

When I have started Cantr there wasn't such an option and all chars were looking as we imagine them. When they brought this, many people disliked for it would create a direct image in minds. I have good looking, normal looking and a little plain chars. I had a char liked someone else but she stood out for his look was a total push off. Some of them defined on some novel characters I have admired during the period and some gained a description after they had a certain way of life style or goal. I like reading details and I find good ones poetic. If people are liking their characters beautiful let them do,if they are lacking some abilities that won't bring them any good...I am afraid soon everyone will start to create bad looking chars on purpose for they felt ashamed or to make their characters more popular. I am sure there will be a balance by the time, just I know Cantria is not a very big community and I don't want to create an OOC pressure on new players by critizing them so much.

Most of my chars sport generic descriptions.
Hopefully their rp creates their descriptions. I love playing a char that two different people see differently... Good looking based on their acts, generosity, and demeanor. Ugly based on opinions, aggression, or rp habits such as personal hygiene, colloquial expressions, anger issues et. al.

when all of those things can be wrapped up in a single character, somebody has created a layered and complex personality. Usually its easy to figure out the two dimensional 'paper dolls'... They grow boring for me.

While I do find it a little annoying when people make their characters "perfectly" attractive or like NancyLee said, godmodding descriptions, I have to admit, even if someone has a horrible, really stupid description that I hate, I can still get really into the character, and someone can have a beautiful description that I admire, and have no substance to the character so I don't enjoy it.

The thing about "putting a direct image in the mind" I'm not sure about, there are many, many times I have to re-read a character's description because I don't remember what they look like, they're not an image to me, they're a personality, I read words on a screen, most times I copy a description and briefly glance over it, so my character can comment on any scars or tattoos or interesting things, but when I "picture" the person in my head, I don't always see the direct image. If I know a character is a redhead, or is a big muscular warrior-type, that's what I see in my head, but it's more generic. I constantly read a description and realize that in my mental image of a character, it's not accurate to the player's description of them. So I don't feel like descriptions really do much but give us an outline that our brain either chooses to follow or to ignore, or to only catch part of.

If a character is always happy, I see a happy smiling person, if they're mopey, I see a depressing, brooding person. If they're working on big machines and vehicles all the time, I see a strong person covered in dirt. Descriptions are a nice outline, I remember what people's hair colors are and what quirks they have. If a woman is "voluptuous with all the curves in all the right places" I just flat out ignore that part and focus on the fact that she has red hair and green eyes and in my mind's eye, I see what to me is an average woman, with red hair and green eyes, I never envision her curves and stuff because my mind doesn't care about those things.
