Well I don't mean now of course, it's way to easy with the current system. But when the changes come it I don't think it would hurt too much to have a short growing season of a basically worthless food, like berries or something.

Now, it's just about the exact opposite.

I have to say, small towns seem to work better. Also if CantrII 2.0 is java based I won't play it, and I think we'll lose alot of players. Could we keep the current version running separatly, on an different site, making it CantrIII instead of 2.0

Cantr 2.0 is a myth! A myth I tell you!

There are changes being made to catr all the time. It evolves continuously, not in massive releases. I would guess there aren't any large changes that have been programmed but are being withheld unless they aren't perfected yet or the GAC isn't sure they'd be good for the game. A version 2.0 would imply that there is some huge project taking place that will be unvieled all at once. Unlikely. In addition, I would be surprised if the programming department put all this effort in to slowly improving the game if they were going to scrap it all of a sudden for another version they'd put together.

Even if there are vague plans for Cantr 2.0, it seems to me that no one needs to worry about it's completion anytime soon and probably ever.

The problem with the web browser format is that it takes up so much bandwidth and large databases. Java will use less bandwidth which means we can have more features like weather, disease, object degradation etc... because the system would be able to handle all the information.

I have Road Runner and Cantr becomes almost impossible to navigate when the turn changes. I can't imagine how it is like for people that have dial up.

What's all the worry about Java, honestly? I only dread "2.0" for it's potentially bad features.

It's almost impossible (I used to be a dial-up). But I don't think the speed of the player's connecting would have any significant impact on that...the lag in the changes is all on the server side, isn't it?

>Kroner
That would be a bit too much of a hoax for me to believe...though it does seem weird to be working on 2 incompatable systems at once. Maybe they have a way to port their work, or maybe they're just fanatics :)

I wouldn't stop playing becuase of a shift in programming or interface...but if some of the changes that have been proposed (and I think promised, though that's hard to tell) for 2.0 come through, I'd probably disappear.

What sorts of changes are they seriously considering? Is there a list somewhere?

I'm afraid this analysis is fairly accurate. There are plans for a Cantr II 2.0, which would be based on a different coding language than the current one (either Java or C++). These plans are around for a very long time and I have made repeated attempts to start coding. Sometimes I came quite far. Maintaining and improving 1.0 takes a lot of time, however, making serious development of 2.0 very difficult. Also, the sheer size of the 2.0 project is a bit daunting, so that little actually happens. The Cantr II 2.0 Development Project was a failure as I was the only active member.

I would like to see a non-browser based client, but firewalls and restrictions for some users to install their own software might make this a bad option. So also a 2.0 might be a browser based client.

Also, I want 2.0 because I want to implement some features that are difficult in the current environment, but I am seeing more and more opportunities to implement them in 1.0 anyway, so there might be no need for a 2.0. Although I would still like to see Cantr in a different language for maintainability reasons. Research is ongoing and perhaps someday there will actually be a 2.0 :) ... But many features might also be implemented in 1.0 - it is more a lack of time than anything else that holds back drastic changes.

I am going to be blunt here, because apparently, sources say I am good at it....

from what I have read of the next cantr... with the seasonal food, and other stuff, but mostly that whole seasonal gathering thing. AND the serious limits that have recently been imposed on our ability to make even the most BASIC of hunting weapons....

I would NOT play the next Cantr. I just this week cut myslf down to only 7 charrys because it to much WORK to keep a charry going. I needed to be able to concentrate what little time I have to play... on jusy those charrys that are established and well on their way.

Newspawns have a hell of a time getting started. Lets think about this here. To make the primitive bow, you need sinew, to get sinew, you have to kill an animal, to kill anything with your bare fist... it takes DAYS.... to make anything better you need all sorts of tools, and extra pieces, it now takes a week or so to make a mid-grade bow...

I know how hard it is for new spawns, one of the charrys I wanted to keep died, and so i went ahead and spawned... that charry is going to have a very hard time surviving in the cantr world because of the personality type i gave her, and the difficulty in getting yourself armed and protected.

Someone asked "at what point does the game become tedious rather then fun".... If the food becomes harder to get, and the weapons get harder to make, and the society becomes more complicated then it already is, people will leave the game left and right. there is only so much you can do to make a game mimic reality before people give up.

I love the cantr people, i love the game, i love the players. but I wont play the new version when it comes out. it will be to much work.
