I have done accents in my time. I once did a kind of combo Scottish/pirate brogue that was much beloved by everyone.
Such a pain in the ass to play, though.

I r-really d-don't k-know h-how p-people k-keep t-this u-up... It would do my head in..
I do love a good Scots/pirate accent though, if done right it's really good. I used to when I played before but not so much now!
Edit: Didn't think that last bit through!

Consistency is the hardest part of doing an accent and really the only thing that annoys me about accents is when others aren't consistent. I guess it's just like anything else - if the player is sloppy about a behavior then I find the entire char annoying, if they are obviously putting some effort into it then they get my respect.
The non-phonetic stuttering of every single word really boggles my mind, though.

Yip, can't stand the constant stuttering of every word, it's not even realistic. People with a stutter either do it when they're excessively nervous or they catch on certain sounds or syllables. And not only is it unrealistic, it's beyond annoying. I don't even read stuttered text, it gives me a head ache.

Ditto, it gets absurd.

In the past when I've rp'ed stuttering, long ago, I mutter the words aloud and put stuttering on words that I personally have trouble with. It just comes naturally.
Someone should do a character with a really bad stutter who gets stuck on a single word and can't get across it, so others would have to finish their sentences. That would be something different.
There was a certain Marie, who died of the sleeping sickness (well, we stopped feeding her) - she only stuttered in points where it made sense and not constantly. That was well done.

Ugh, the sloppy stuttering is my absolute pet hate. K-know, t-think, C -Charlotte, s-sure... Really? What the hell? Are you actually aware that our characters are 'hearing' that, and so you're not making any sense?
Can't quote stuff easily while I'm on my mobile, but SumBum and BosBabe, I am with you both on that. I don't read it, full stop.
Also, god-modding descriptions. No, the appearance of your char doesn't put me in the mind of whatever you put in the desc, or affect my state of mind or cause/force me to commit actions against my (or my chars') will. Your legs, however long, or your arse, however tight, won't make me turn around and look again unless I choose to! Please stop that nonsense, it's just ridiculous.

That is definitely my pet hate. I think I even take better the surreal stutter. What if my character thinks that your "beautiful face" is anything but beautiful, or your "sexy, perfect body" doesn't make me even look twice? Argh.
Grumpy mode OFF.

One of my favorite characters stutters and I've never had a problem reading it. I guess I should have been more specific about 'accents' as I find them more puzzling than annoying and I can recall one 'pirate' accent I definitely loved. But I honestly can't figure out what one person is saying half the time, the accent is so thick.

They key is to read it out loud (or "out loud" in your head) very quickly, and suddenly you hear it.

I also have a problem with consistency in accents. How I test to see how good one is is watching the character when they're getting emotional. A good accent will either stay the same or get thicker. If it drops all together, I assume the character just has a fake accent or the player got lazy.
Isn't that the point of a thick accent? Not being able to understand them? I think that's an opportunity for good rp, there.

Yes but it doesn't make it any less puzzling.

Re: Things that annoy or puzzle you about Cantr
I have a character now that had a very distinctive way of speaking when s/he spawned, but has really changed a lot in the years since... and the speech patterns evolved as well. Still redolent of those early days, but much more informal and relaxed now. Just like the person. So inconsistency in speech patterns or even accents or stutters doesn't need to be a liability, as long as it's played realistically... I hope mine is, who knows.
And one of my *other* chars spawned near one of catwill's, and for the first ten days, really struggled with speech until it all settled down... lots of mispronounced words, poor half-grammar, repetition, etc. and not always easy to understand by any means. But I don't remember it being a source of irritation.
