Seeing someone die

Postby Estaar » Thu Feb 27, 2014 8:37 am

As you all know, the game says 'You see XY die.' when someone does. I would much prefer 'XY dies' as a formulation, since it gives the other players the option of reacting to the death or not.

Being told that I see someone die and not reacting (f.ex. because my character is inside with their back turned to the open window and can therefore not possibly see XY die - even if the game says so ...) always makes me feel like a cold-hearted b****.

What about you, guys?

Sure, but this should be in the sugestions forum. I think the "you see" format is universal, though.

I've never taken it to be a forced "your char MUST react to this event" kind of thing. You can pretty much choose whatever your char can/should see even from other chars' emotes. As Doug said, there are many things that, by game wording, would force your char to notice to things if you let them: someone arriving from a road, newspawns, people moving in and out of buildings, etc.

Instead of changing the echo, why not make it truly random? You still get the 'You notice so and so die.' echo... but only if you succeed in a spot check.

No thanks. As a town leader it is crucial that you see when people die, so you quickly can swoop up the keys and whatnot. No randomness there please.

If someone of the crew on my characters pirate ship dies. I want to get his weapon ASAP before someone else does.

I'm not sure.. Currently, almost all events are formulated as "you see...". You see people steering boats, tossing coins, etc. etc. I think in the end, I don't really care, as long as it's clear.

In general, though, I think it's better to keep things as neutral as possible, letting players decide by themselves what they see, and things like that, so I'm more -for- than against this.

Well, It is obvious here that our chars see stuff. I've always figured that the reason why we don't react to stuff our chars see is because, like in real life, while our chars see evrything, they can filter their attention. I mean, in real life I can see what I'm writing right now, but I also see my fan's blades moving, my computer's light blinking, my fingers moving, the notes stuck to my monitor moving because of the air, but I filter all those things to pay attention to the writing. And that's what my chars do too.

Don't forget all the blind characters who can't 'see' anything. ;)
