Everyone should earn everything, not be given stuff. This shapes character.

Perhaps, but I can't keep track of everyone's work.

If you want to know how to handle drama in your town, just go to the Naedell Blackrock or Laila Moreno School of Governance.

Laila Mareno is both amazingly kind and amazingly cruel... depending on which side of hers you get on. I'm glad my character is on her good side. :D She's the perfect leader of a pioneer town.

I've never heard of Laila before now but she sounds fun. :D

If it helps to prove that I'm not just interested in getting free stuff for my newspawns, I'm going to say again that if there were more leaders who actually RPed being close-fisted or extremely strict or just plain mean, I'd have enough fun with that to make the extra work not matter so much.

Thinking about it more, I think most of my newspawns just wind up feeling unfulfilled because it never seems like their town has any actual need for them. There's no really necessary job to do or niche for them to fill, so they just wander from one batch of pointless busy work to another feeling out of place and unwanted, until eventually they switch gears to trying to get everything they need to be independent as fast as possible so they're free to pursue their own goals or help others who might be stuck in similar situations.

I agree that feeling "wanted" and/or "useful", besides of the personal goals that the char has, really helps making you feel attached to a town, at least for me. And on that subject, I'd really would love to thank a couple of towns, but I'd totally out me. You're so good at making newspawns truly feel at home there, that there's no wonder you gain everlasting loyalties even if some things are just downright exasperating sometimes, one can't help but feel grateful and want to contribute as much as one can.

This definitely applies to one of my chars who is well over 30. Again, personality of the char determines how long they hold on, but I think this one is -finally- ready to let go.

I have had the 'joy'? :? of meeting the bad said of both of these women with different characters. One made it out alive, the other died by her hand. I think both these leader characters have some sort of disorder. Made for good RP though. :)

I had two die from one of those characters. One was long drawn out, with lots of conversation and an emotional heartbreak for me as well..the other was during my characters' long sleep..sigh. She did talk before killing though, and my character kind of deserved it.

Psychopathy?

I can't remember meeting one of those, but two (and maybe as many as four) of my characters met the other. One ended up getting killed by her because he couldn't shut his smartarse mouth up, and the other is a friend of a close friend to her, and he has some reservations about her. The other two may have met her in passing and in war.

I think Naedell's cruelty is born from practicality. I think she's the way she is because she feels she has to be to stay on top (both personaly and keeping the Tribe on top).

I know Laila's issue in-character, so I won't ruin it for the rest of you by sharing here.

I've sort of had a theory that something bad happened to her in her early life, but then again she doesn't seem like the kind of person who would blame her actions on a "bad childhood".

My character never thought of Laila as cruel. In fact, on one occasion when she treated another harshly, she was receptive to others' opinions and actually reversed her actions toward that person. It's true that she is all business, and doesn't suffer a lot of foolishness, though.

Again, never met her myself, but I know that it's easy for any prominent character who isn't 100% sweet and saccharine at all times to get a reputation like this whether they deserve it or not, when really a lot of times it's just a matter of how others approach them.

I mean from what I've read here I get the impression she's not just killing characters for fun but just really strict about enforcing the laws, though I could be completely wrong.

I have the same feeling, but I didn't stuck around long enough to be proven right or wrong.
The time my char was there, Naedell was a sweetheart to her without expecting anything in return, generous and supportive without a honeyed layer that my char didn't need or wouldn't have cared about most probably. I liked her a lot and I have the feeling that if I would have stayed longer, I'd have been following her around like a duckling.
