Having a large map doesn't spread people out, people leaving their spawn towns does. I think the issue is deeper then just having a big map. Players are bored of the standard little townships and want to create something different, special, and exciting, but ultimately fail. I speak through experience.

Yeah, but as you (Chroma) say, no one has combined the maps yet, to give the whole picture. I assume it will happen some time within the next 30 decades (IC) though. :)

Mutes.

Edit: I will say that I have met one recently that is played very well. The player does not rely on dust, dirt, pointing at notes, etc to communicate.

I have a "mute" (technically, he just has injured vocal chords and can speak but only with much pain), and he uses some gimmicks to communicate... but I try not to rely on them. It's super hard, but I enjoy the challenge as well.

I don't really mind someone using notes...if I couldn't speak in RL I know for a fact I'd be texting people non-stop and carrying around a notebook and pen everywhere I go.

My "mute" has terrible handwriting though, and can't spell to boot. :D It's fun watching the town trying to decipher his scribbles.

I'm sure people play mutes for the challenge of it, then get frustrated and start using "crutches". It's understandable, but still annoying to me. Passing notes is fine and I agree that the real life scenario would involve a lot of written communication. Scratching things into the sand along the shore probably would not be seen by someone busy working across town inside a building. Especially if no noise is made to gain the attention of others.

That brings up another annoyance of Cantrians seeing everything. I'm guilty of it, too. If a char turns their back to mine and makes a face at another char, mine shouldn't react to it. I know it's hard not to sometimes. I'm trying to improve my own RP in that regard.

I haven't ever been able to figure out why getting a character involved and feeling part of a town is so dang hard. Maybe it's my own feelings, but trying to understand all of the pre-established relationships between characters already there is somewhat overwhelming. And then I just become annoyed. :?

Throwing my character into a new town is frustrating sometimes. After years of playing I still work to figure out the best ways to do it, maybe it's why so few of my newspawns make it. How do you all do it?

Depending on your character's personality, I find that it helps to immerse myself into the town infrastructure. For instance, maybe get involved with one of the town businesses or the military or the government or some such thing. With that you can then develop social relationships with the towns folk. Of course, if your character isn't a joiner then that won't work. But... it's one strategy.

For that, I find it just takes time. Even from the other point of view, so many newspawns don't make it, in a somewhat-busy town, I get them all confused until they've been around and active enough so that I start recognizing their name. Those that spawn quiet and sleepy, they're much harder to remember.

Spawn, see what projects are not being worked on, join in, ask for tools to brimg the place to a better standard with the help of your chars efforts, listen to what is going on meanwhile.

Never fails and have worked for most of my chars. :)

My chars must be off-putting, even if offering free labor.

Only a few of my chars breeze through meeting strangers. Some have lived in one town for several decades and still feel like an outsider (yes, they do interact). Looking back, most of my chars moved around quite a lot until finding a place that either didn't annoy the crap out of them or didn't treat them badly. My most recent newspawn was completely ignored, in spite of my char making multiple attempts to talk or interact with those awake and talking to each other. Another of my chars recently made a stop in a town and experienced a lot of cliquish behavior / getting ignored / simply feeling unwelcome. Not really a criticism directed at those towns. It's natural that people interact with those they know and aren't quick to embrace the newbie.

In other words, I don't really have much advice but I feel your pain?

Edit: Actually, I do have some advice from observations but I don't think it would win me any popularity contests with other players.

And in other towns everyone falls all over themselves to make the newspawn feel welcome and they just walk off with barely a word.

It does suck to be ignored, but it can be used as an opportunity to develop the character. I've found most of my characters falling into certain patterns without even really meaning it, usually depending on how they're treated in the first week...if they're treated well they'll become faithful to their spawntown and the first older chars who take them under their wing almost to a fault, if the town just doesn't 'click' for whatever reason they tend to become loners and wanderers, and if people are rude to them or they're ignored to the point where they literally can't even get bone tools or a shield, they a lot of times wind up with a chip on their shoulder about authority...the last one there is the only time I can ever bring myself to seriously play a criminal.

I had a character who went through that. He was pretty much ignored, and had to make his own bone tools and hide clothes. This caused him to get a healthy distrust for people and a fiercely independent streak. He pretty much hates all government, but he is friendly when visiting governed towns. He just doesn't like to stay long.

I think everyone has a character like that. One of my spawned in an abandoned town only because some travelers were passing through it, and they immediately left, leaving him in an area with no food, no ability to gather/get food, and a lot of hostile animals.
