Character help

Postby colonel » Mon Oct 04, 2004 11:17 pm

Hello, I have a character in Cantr that is mute and I was just wondering if anyone had some ideas they could share on how I can make this character even better. (Roleplaying) I have notes and I do a lot of gestures but I am running out of ideas. My character is in a building away from others right now so I am safe but I would like to play this gimmick out more. Any ideas?

Sorry if this is in the wrong area of the forum. I am new here.

*developed variations of listening and observing rp is useful*

But just make sure not to make him one day...able to speak in poor RP.

Good luck, there are others here who have char disabilities...one of the best I've seen is played by Seko.

Well thank you. I am afraid that I will screw it up by talking by accident one time but I am trying to stay in character with him. I have found so far that there are some very good rpers out there and I have a lot to learn.

As you pass notes to people explaining why you aren't speaking, you will be become better known. Then when someone asks who you are, another person can say that's so and so, he doesn't speak. From then on it's hand gestures and notes. I have come into contact with a character Mylina, who does this very well, without speaking.

I have a feeling that those who take the time to get to know you, will be truer friends. Kind of like real life.

I have been doing that Cherize and so far it has been working very well. I must say it is very hard not to talk with him though when I have other characters that do talk. I am worried I might slip one time.

I must say though that this character is a good way to learn how to role play better.

Usually people start mute characters when they don't know the language when in fact that makes it even more difficult. Colonel, is your character also deaf or just mute? Usually muteness is either caused by unability to hear, a mental trauma or a brain injury (it may affect intelligence too). If he can write then he has a consept of words in his head but a brain disfunction may be preventing him from saying them. Enough science babble, anyway most likely he can still produce meaningless sounds, though he may not be conscious of that. (Total muteness would require the non-existance of vocal cords.) So unless he's deaf, he may try to catch people's attention with meaningless sounds like groaning. Also since he cannot shout "Hey, you there", he will most likely touch people before expressing his business with sign language to be sure they have noticed his presence. Facial expressions are most likely to be exaggerated.

:) I had a mute character in a chatroom rp, she was retarded and had a bad hygiene but she was really sweet.. too bad no one goes to that place anymore. Actually she wasn't totally mute, she could say her own name but only if somebody would point at her, and usually people didn't realize that. She liked food, bugs and dancing. I have some kind of a habit playing people with disabilities.

Now I'm thinking about the boy Roach in the movie People Under the Stairs. He wasn't really mute but his tongue had been cut out and he must have been a little crazy too, but anyway, he was nice... Too bad he died so early. Everybody hates that movie...
It was Sean Whalen.. and his first movie appearance according to imdb.com. He never gets important roles anywhere.

He can hear very well and so far he has been doing a lot of facial expressions. He can write very well to so he is lucky in that sense. I just wanted to try it out so then I could get my rping skill up a little. I need a lot of work. (Sometimes I think I am way out of my league with some of you guys. I am very impressed.) I am learning more and more everyday from other characters and that is good.

It does take some time and extra effort to do a character like this but like it was said in the posts before, people help you out and tell others that you are mute and this cuts down on time. I think any character that you work hard at building up takes time and effort so why not make it someone that you really don't know about. I mean I find it a learning experience and that makes it even more enjoyable.

It'd be nice to try a mute character one day, but I think there's too many of them around, from what I've heard. Though I still haven't met one...

From the sounds of it there might be a few mute characters out there. But you could always try a character of a different kind. I have never come across a blind character yet. Is there any?

*Raise a hand* If you have someone near Naron area you might come across Nayome, she's my blind dancer. But she ain't so well-played people say.
