Re: Things that annoy or puzzle you about Cantr
First, I want to say that in all the time I've played Cantr, not one of my characters have been involved in a rape scenario directly, either as victim or perpetrator. I've always assumed that this was due to the fact that the characters I tend to play, inevitably extensions of myself whether I like it or not, have no inclination to be a rapist or be raped and tend to give off that "vibe". I've never had a player request this scenario through an ooc message. I have, however, indirectly been witness to incidents between other characters, including rape scenarios. But the most disturbing scene i was privy to involved the cutting our of a kidnapped woman's tongue by the member of a pirate crew. The perpetrator was a talented writer and obviously a bit demented, but I remember feeling quite physically nauseated during the experience.
I was unaware of any ooc communication between the victims and the perpetrators, and I'm sure the presence of which would have certainly diminished the experience greatly.

Since cutting out a tongue wouldn't be sexual, I would think it wouldn't require a OOC request to ensure consensual agreement. The "victim" could also easily choose not play along with that, or play along for now until they later get "cured" by drinking healing liquid, etc. Still...that would be hauntingly, disturbingly awesome.

Reading this and previous exchanges makes me feel like the strength and combat systems that cantr employs have become an excuse to engage in god-modding. =/
Edit: Okay, moreso previous exchanges than this latest one.

I would not rp with an individual who just decided they could do things to my character. Its one thing to attack, its another to dictate body parts and the seriousness of the wound.

As I understand it, to engage in ANY graphic behavior, you need consent. This includes both sexual and nonsexual roleplay, ie, violence. So if you attempt to cut out someone's tongue (which is realistic if they're unconscious, or unable to prevent you from doing it) you need consent first to graphically depict the severing of that tongue. Otherwise, you should fade to black and inform them later of what's happened - or, should they wish to not have a character with a severed tongue (and it's on them to make that known OOCly) then just kill them and move on.

I just have to say something...
This is an interesting topic and one it's possible to have differences of opinion on...
But I was thinking it over and I just laughed out loud.
The title of this thread is "Things that annoy or puzzle you about Cantr"
And Seko, I say this with all affection and long-standing respect for you as a player and your presence on the forums and your role as a staff member.... but your comment was essentially:
"You know what sucks about this game? I just don't get raped enough."
It's like something a transgressive stand-up comedian would work into his/her act or something, and then there would be like some kind of Twitter/media backlash, and there would be symposia at prestigious universities on the topic, and Gloria Steinem would have to weigh in, and then some politician would express support for it and have to resign... Now I'm sitting here wondering if I should submit this post, but there's just something hilarious about the way you put this out there, under this heading...
Sorry if that offends, I don't mean to take a serious topic and make light, it just hit me weird just now.

Re: Things that annoy or puzzle you about Cantr
Lately I've come across some players that seem to think you have rush rp. If you're not on in the next 5 to 10 minutes, they post again and again and again then move on to a completely new topic. It becomes irritating. You don't have to rp an encounter completely in 10 minutes before you have to log off. There is such a thing as drawing out the rp and taking a "pause" before picking it up a little bit later. I can understand the rush in emergency situations but just basic rp, there's no need for you to rp everything out within the time you are actually online and move on. For goodness sake, try to take a little more time in the rp, don't rush the other player.
Oh and then there's the ones that start an rp with you on one thing....you pause to pick it up the next day and they've dropped the previous rp completely. That's irritating too.

Re: Things that annoy or puzzle you about Cantr
I'm glad I haven't run into that much. At one point I was playing with someone who complained about "sleeping" if I didn't reply fast enough, even though I was online all the time. In the past I used to spend up to half an hour writing a single post, but I don't care about details or length that much anymore. If it's not coming out easily then I'm not going to waste my time trying to make the post longer.

I would rather read shorter posts than one that is long and changes subject 3 times!
More so on the radio... Come on people, do you really not care that EVERYONE near a radio, hears your personal business? It isn't a private conversation!! Some of the things said, shouldn't be said in the middle of a small town, let alone, a public radio..
Maybe the people you are talking about, don't want their business spread on the radio? I have heard some rather personal things shared.. about other peoples feelings, actions.. what not.. that had no purpose being shared on the radio.. other than to have a conversation.

It makes me wish for some sort of phone system. No more personal business spread about the open airwaves.

Re: Things that annoy or puzzle you about Cantr
I don't really get how people can have 15 characters. I don't have the time, even if I had a bunch that were mute or just kind of passive or straight up workers or whatever, I'd feel like I had to keep up with all the role play and that's exhausting. And also, characters who wake up after days not having any idea what's been happening in a town DO annoy me, so I don't have any interest in playing that.
So I have three characters only, and I like that I get to spend more time with them and invest in their development and interaction with others. More would seem like too many, less like too few.
But my ability to RP more with those three, I think might be overwhelming or irritating for others who have more charries to manage, and I find it hard to modulate to the appropriate level sometimes.
So I wish Cantr had 2000 players that each played 3 characters, instead of 250 that each play 15.
But I love the game, so I guess I'm not really that irritated.

I agree with this completely, and have often thought Cantr actually suffered a little with the minute cap was removed.
There is one exception though, there is one player that does it but it suits the characters eccentric and hyper personality.

Re: Things that annoy or puzzle you about Cantr
I have 15 characters. In the past I was able to read everything that happened overnight, but in some towns I'm like screw this, it has nothing to do with my character anyway. Then I just skim read to see if characters my character cares about said anything. That's why I wish it was possible to ignore certain characters. Maybe it's mean to think this way but it feels like some characters are just unrelated and not part of my character's story.

Re: Things that annoy or puzzle you about Cantr
Yeah, I can go either way on it. On the one hand, there are some towns I don't care what's happening, I don't really want to be a part of it, especially when there is a lot of bad drama or irritating characters.
On the other hand, with less characters to run, I find I'm more invested in making sure that whatever people are talking about in a town does relate to the three I have. I don't have any "placeholder" characters, so I'm more involved in making sure that what they do "counts" in some sense, even if it's just being a good town fool or whatever.
But in the end if there are good roleplayers it doesn't matter, because they find a way to make all their characters great one way or another.
And my post wasn't directed at you Seko, even though we have charries in the same place. You are a great player! Always fun, your folks always well played.
I've also wished for the ability to "ignore" certain characters, but I think it would create some pretty weird situations.
