you must not have a toon in Blerk Hills then, or otherwise don't see the "special" aspects of my character there. :)

on topic. the mommy/daddy/son/daughter stuff is actually quite cute when looked at through a purely IC prospective, but then when you consider that these people might actually know each other out of game then it quickly losses its appeal. i don't mind this sort of behavior, in fact i think it's cool to see people work together as a united group without being some sort of organization. still, it works best if done purely in character (obviously)

Any time I see the whole family deal in Cantr I just assume that 'mother' and 'father, etc, mean different things in cantr than in real life. I always assume it's an adoption type of scenario, not a blood relation, and that the parents are more like mentors. The whole actual parent-child relationship though, yes, that's kind of weird.

I don't know, personally I wouldn't know how to go about saying "I'm your relative now, deal with it" in cantr, but that's just me. I wouldn't be against it, but I wouldn't want the newspawn to act like a baby/little kid either; the only thing I do like about that is that it offers a special connection between characters that only a family can bring, but that's already in cantr without the child aspect. Which I'm glad for.

This is how I tend to make sense of this too. Way back when there was a significant number of players who wanted children in game. I'm sure that if you did a search you'd find lots and lots of threads and posts about it. In fact, on at least one occasion, there was a "pregnancy" and an actual childbirth. I think it was in Siom, but I could be mistaken. I could never get my head around it. There were just too many things that didn't fit with cantr, especially the fact that newspawns are 20 years old when they make themselves known. I can live with the way families are roleplayed in game right now. I just chalk it up to regional customs and traditions.

The brother/sister thing causes me no problems at all. That part seems as right as rain :)

I used to not have a problem with the whole brother / sister thing too until I saw too many start complicating it with aunts, uncles, cousins and so on.

I'm not as against the whole brother / sister thing as I am with the parent / grandparent / child. That to me is just too much and taking it too far. That's my opinion. And by the now numerous Mother / daughter situations and grandparent I've seen in game, there's quite a lot of people who don't agree with my opinion. It still bugs me, and bothers me with stepping into a town and having Mummy, mommy or Daddy every other sentence from someone, or the whole town focused on the "child". I tend to avoid those places. And I have seen too many instances of when a mom and dad take on a "child" in game, the child then becomes no more than a 20 year old with a 5 year old mentality and acts like a child. And that ruins it for me. This game doesn't have children, it's not supposed to have children or you wouldn't start out as a 20 year old in the first place.

right because popping up in the middle of town suddenly with full speech capability, knowledge of math and reading, a set mentality and even govermental/political preferences as well as a full adult body makes much more sense as opposed to starting out as a child xD

i think some of you are reading too far into the family thing. i'm with littlesoul on the adoption thing.

I think there's no children in game. However, when I spawned a char, and let it develop an innocent, curious personality, and a couple of chars asks the young char if it wants them to become it's parents (because they have talked about it in game and the young char has a childlike side that makes them think it needs protection) , and from that, a net of people that care for each other becomes a family, and keeps people from going silent, is it -really- so bad? As long as it doesn't affect the mechanics in game, I don't see how that can affect roleplay.

I think that if it's working, then go for it. :) The fact is, I've seen a lot of great role-play from some child-like characters.

The child-like children can get annoying sometimes. I've seen that kind of character done well, but when there's one in every one of your character's towns, it can get draining. I've had a character take on a child before, but they weren't child-like. It was more about taking care of someone in a bad circumstance. My character wasn't even that much older, treated the child like an adult, and was just the sort of person that takes people under their wing, even if they are older.

So, I think there are ways to make it work. The players just have to find a good balance, and not make the situation obnoxious for the rest of the town. Families, lovers, drama, anything emotionally charged can get really annoying when you're not a part of it.

This. I think this is what makes the radio so annoying to some people as well. It's talk, it's setting off your notification, but you don't have a single thing to do with it except listen.

Actually, the whole notification thing was driving me bonkers so I went into character settings and set it to not turn on notifications from radio messages with the filter.

Rather handy. Highly suggested.

Well, of course. If you have an important, well known character it might not be a good idea to have it on all the time. You can always read it later. If you're constantly playing said character you probably don't need the filter on anyways, since you're always clicking back to the events screen.

I am addicted to the radio, actually. I love reading all these loose bits of story, trying to figure out what is happening. And no, that was not sarcasm.
