Uses of the Radio

Postby Money » Thu May 16, 2013 5:39 am

So I've been sitting beside the radio lately and boy has it changed since I first started playing. The radio chatter is off the charts, people are always talking talking talking! It has gotten to the point where even in game people are talking about their opinion on the "proper uses of the radio", so I thought why not on the forum as well?

Personally I think its great, I prefer not to use the radio but the fact that other characters take joy in it is all that matters to me. What grinds my gears is the people who keep trying to limit the radio chatter by adding to the chatter! Its a lost cause, if you want a trade only channel or to have an uninterrupted moment with your long distance boyfriend take it to another channel. Clutterless radio is a thing of the past, especially with all the publicly accessible radios.

I love the radio. The radio counts for about half the activity in Cantr, I'm sure of it.

When people complain about other's using the radio for 'superficial chatter' while they're "Stuck in a room with it in case of important notifications", it just makes me laugh. I compare it to someone watching the TV commercials and then complaining that they're not all adapted to suit for that individual.

It's a shame that so many characters don't seem to realize (unless I missed something epic) that repeaters only work on the first radio channel. If repeaters could use the other frequencies, most of the radio complaints would be sorted in the blink of an eye... Except for those master mimickers that can pretend to be other characters with such ease.

My character that uses the radio most, tends to get tied up in lengthy conversations about superficial things, but if someone makes an important announcement that could be missed as a result of his banter, I tend to repeat it on their behalf a few times, or make sure the message reaches them personally.

I understand that some players don't have the time to read through a hundred radio messages 'just in case' something important to their character is sent, and I try to respect that as often as I can... But in return I hope that they understand, the whole of Cantr isn't going to stop talking to adjust solely to their needs.

To be honest, when characters complain about my character using the radio for general banter, my character gets tempted to use it more. The only thing that holds him back, is knowing that if he has a right to rabbit on all day, the character complaining, also has every right to complain. It makes for a fair setup.

People just need to duplicate the repeater array on a second frequency.

It is perfect for some of my characters! An instrument for bringing sorrowfulness!

.. And happiness!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees the hypocrisy in people telling others to stop talking while only accomplishing adding to the noise. Perhaps the annoyance will lead to something more productive like splitting up the stations. This could lead to more receivers being made, a perfect new project for the complacent towns that have everything.

Adding receivers is already done where it's helpful, but the core problem is a lack of repeaters on other frequencies. You need those first before making second receivers is of much use.

I have a character who's fallen in love with the possibilities of radio. And another who thinks it's a useful tool but has no other opinion beyond that.

Different characters think different things. Why can't I pick more than one option?

The radio is annoying because it's like the Internet, the possibility of being anonymous makes people act like jerks and say things they would never say to people's face.

I hate the radios and how they are used, seriously this may be one of the deciding factors of me baling out yet again...being forced to listen to it because so many put the radios in the workshops and put a window in there. There are times a radio event sets off 6 of my chars. Forced to listen, badgered for complaining....I thought this was about me having a good time?

You can filter out radio events with custom filters nowadays or at least set them not to light up your character. The settings icon is where tailoring menu used to be before it was moved into manufacturing.

The radio tends to make me feel... drained. I don't know why, but there's just something about a huge wall of text that makes me not want to do anything.

I don't think characters can hear what comes over the radio unless they are standing in the same room.

That said, I think that having some sort of identifier, even if its a numerical coordinate or some such thing might go a long way in improving the quality of the radio's contribution to cantr. The annoying trolling that goes on is extremely tiresome, as are the purposeful attempts to turn significant exchanges into ridiculous confusion.

They cant but the set up in so many towns is put the radio with the machines and open the window, so your hearing the radio, the people with you, the people outside. It's a lot in a large town/s.

Thank you for showing me how to keep the radio for dinging my spy though, that's a great help.

Ditto. But I can filter it. Can't really filter normal speech, and I have been seeing walls of that lately. Wonderful for those involved, but just puts me into a coma.
