How do you macke charcoal?
I heard that you turned wood into charcoal...which would be logical since thats how it is in the real world.... what machine do you need?

Is that so...

Not necessarily. But if you don't know, you'll have trouble RPing that your character can figure it out. And the forum enforcers like restricting legal OOC knowledge...
Try looking for all posts containing 'charcoal'. That might work.

Why in the world are you encouraging Capital Rule breaches, Industriallist? Even if it were listed somewhere on the forum, it's a CRB to use OOC knowledge in-game, and to use the knowledge attained from the forum in order to advance your characters.
The link you posted goes to a topic which explains about what your character sees in-game, against what he knows in-game. If he seens someone making an oven, then he should know what it's for by asking. If he sees someone using the oven, then he should know what it's for by witnessing it in action.
Even if charcoal is made from 'glakagin' (Just a random word there.), the character doesn't know! He has no idea that Charcoal even EXISTS until he witnesses it or discovers it (Of course, this is debatable by everyone, and I'm sure others would express that he has all the knowledge in the world, which I think is just pathetically stupid...)
Don't encourage CR breaches <.<

It is a bit of a matter of good roleplay, I think. If you play well and interesting, you don't have your character just know everything. But players cannot be expected to remember exactly what their char experienced and what not. So it's a matter of how well you are as a player, not a matter of illegal or legal play. Only in extreme cases (e.g. sharing maps) should the PD intervene - not in basic cases.
How can I possibly be encouraging CR breaches? This was the capping point to a debate about whether characters ought to know the functions of machines that they haven't yet built.
If you read the topic, you will see that this quote is distinctly on the side of 'character can know what player knows' about such things. Jos suggested that one might RP not having such knowledge, but clearly said that it wasn't a CRB issue.
As for why I keep bringing this up, I absolutely hate this conclusion. So if it is the conclusion, I'm going to do my best to make sure that everyone knows what the ruling is. If you don't like it, take it up with the source, not the irritating messanger
EDIT: I'm going to get clobbered, aren't I...

Heheh *tries to tell Anthony and the rest not to clobber Industriallist* He's just presenting what was presented to him in the bloody ambiguous (I'm really liking that word at the moment) answer presented. It is however, to my knowledge, a technical CR breach if you use anything OOC knowledge from the forums to use IC. But you can discover it nonetheless. So if you're gonna use OOC knowledge, at least find an IC excuse (ie-discovery).
Hopefully that's a fair compromise.
OH and something else! FIX THE DAMNED TITLE of this topic. Please.

there's a need for consistency. if what he's doing is legal, then there should be no problem. if what he's doing isn't acceptable, the law should be changed.

So... all characters made by Cantr newbs have to be idiots? Or all characters have to be idiots? Fun choice.
Frankly, if every newspawn has to ask fifty stupid questions about how the game works before they can function, I'm not going to spawn any more. Maybe I can start a punching class in Olipifirovash so people don't have to break the rules by hitting.
If it's on the manufacture list, I understand it. Until the authorities agree that that's wrong, I'll continue.

Ok, first off, they shouldn't even know about half that stuff till they see it, like once they see it they can ask about it if they want, but in real life would you just go around asking "what's this do what's that do?", take it as your character goes along. You don't have to know how to get iron immediately, since that it seems is what most people do =-\.

I figure all that is a logical continuation of the crackdown on characters who understand Cantr.
I'm not sure if newspawns know about charcoal. That's a FUZZY AREA. But I'm not breaking any rules by knowing about it, and if you follow that logic, neither would anyone else be.
Your characters are all separate, yes? So how come your first character has to figure out the world before your second character can understand it? Unless you actually agree that characters should be as ignorant as bricks...
It must be harder for newbs to break CR than other people. Clever. Try this: encrypt everything. Then only smart people can break CR. Makes no LESS sense, maybe even more.

Because:
- You can't find from outside sources what the things in Cantr do, since some of them are counterintuitive and fail to match IRL useage.
- Trying to find out on the forum is suppressed.
- Characters are, have been, and apparantly will continue to be allowed to 'guess' things like the purpose of the stone table. I for one would never have guessed that.
How many people who are not new would have a character thing about making pottery, for example. It doesn't exist, as has been stated several times, but it looks as if it might, until you build the right machines, or find out OOC.
I think that is exactly the kind of thing Netherspawn meant.
