Changing character name?

Postby AmateurHistorian » Sun Sep 05, 2004 10:46 pm

Is there any way to change the name of a character once it's created? I have a character that I created with one name, but then I immediately started using a variation on the original name, and have not used the original name since.

Well, just go the people list, and click on the character description for your character. Type in the new name, and that's how it should appear.

Someone else posted a reply here that was deleted. Why?

The information in the post gave people information that could be used to abuse something in the game or just lead to havok.

They WILL most likely watching for people useing that info for a bit. It is probally something that shouldn't happen often, or at all.
Reality was never my strong point.

I understand that. But not only was the other user's post deleted, my original post was edited to remove the information that they don't want people to see.

This should be fixed by the programmers. Censorship is a very poor way to deal with something like this. And it makes me (and doubtless others) wonder whether censorship is going on elsewhere in the Forums.

Thanks whoever deleted it
It's been said on the forums before, and honestly, I've used that technique several times. To change a characters last name, such as if they joined a clan or something... But, hey, whatever..

This forum and thgis game are free and provided to us by Jos and the staff. If they feel something needs to be deleted or censored for the good of the game... I am all for it. No need to take a vote or have them report to little old me as to the things they must do to keep the game fair and fun.

They can block it on the forum if they want to. They certainly have a right to control it. But youi can't erase knowledge. By not even admitting to it's existance, they're just giving anyone who has no idea what we're talking about a vulnerability...

Are you suggesting it is best to advertise a possible game exploitation so no one is at a disadvantage, therefore making abuse of this exploitation even more widespread?

No, I'm suggesting that the problem should be actually fixed, instead of resorting to censorship to keep people from learning about it.

However, if the staff *isn't* going to fix the problem, then yes, that is the next best solution. Why should just a few people know how to exploit this problem? They should openly announce that it's a problem, and until further notice, "the problem" -- which I can't mention, or it will be edited out -- renders this feature untrustworthy.

I'm sure you've raised a loud enough voice to be heard, or you can PM/email GAC or someone personally. But I'm confident making this case heard publicly on General Support, is not the best course of action.

I don't know why you think so, since this is where the issue started. But yes, I have e-mailed Jos.

I'd advise waiting until Jos or a GAC member, or the staffmember involved, make comments before continuing with your ramblings about the incident.

You can direct all your anger and sarcastic praise towards me, gentlemen. I was the one that edited your first post, and removed Industriallist's comment.

I agree that it should be fixed, however, the problem has been reported multiple times to the Programming Department, even by myself when I discovered it personally. However, since they already know of it, it doesn't need to be commented on for all to see - especially those that have no idea about it, as they could plan on abusing it, no matter how significant or insignificant the effect may be on the game.

I reccommend (But obviously can't enforce) that people not make comments on bugs and flaws in the game, but rather, e-mail bugs@cantr.net about it, and they will do what they can - However, the rest of the Cantr world doesn't need to know, especially if they plan on using it.

Remember, Industriallist: "Knowledge is Power". Power can be good, or bad.
