Problem with staying IC.
I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this, but if nothing else the moderators can get rid of it if necessary, but I was wondering, does anyone else have a problem with staying IC as far as emoticons go?

or along those lines out of habit and forgetting to stay IC, it's not really that severe, it happens rarely and its just dealing with emoticons, but has anyone else had that problem or is it just me?

I think the longer you play, the less that will be an issue for you. I often have to watch out for using real life references in slang, phrases or colloquialisms that don't exist in the world of cantr. For instance: "cry like a baby" (babies don't exist in cantr) "Don't let the cat out of the bag" (no cats) or "can of worms".... yeah... I could go on forever....

I do the occasional "chat smiley" now and then in game. It usually happens when I am busy IRL and just type a quick remark in game.

I don't believe I ever used smileys IC... I do that sometimes when speaking OOC'ly, though, but that doesn't count, I guess.

I find it hard to tell what characters are supposed to know and what not. The 'week' thing is pretty clear, but what about other concepts or abstract words we use? Names for feelings for example?

Characters are assumed to be human, or very human-like, so any human emotion would be okay I guess.

Ugh, I usually have that emoticon problem when I'm up really late and I'm teetering on the edge of passing out. It always ended with an awkward OOC apology xD

Edit: nm, I completely misread the op.

Re: Problem with staying IC.
I've never had a personal problem with using smilies in emotes unless I happen to find the emote really funny, and sometimes I'll make an 'ooc' smiley to say so within the emoticon, but it's never meant to be taken as part of what the character is doing. Anyway, that happens so rarely I doubt most people here have seen any of my characters do that.
I do use emoticons in OOC stuff sometimes, like if I'm apologizing to someone or explaining an emote that someone took the wrong way (usually accompanied with an apology). I also sometimes use them in notes and pretend that my character actually drew them since it's kind of weird to write *a smiley face is drawn here* in a note.
As for idioms, I do use those sometimes, though not the ones just mentioned above.
