The best situation is to make a lock and have the matching key, or to find a key matching a lock in the place where you find the key.
But you also find keys but not the matching lock and buildings with unlocked locks but no key around (in deserted cities, for example).
Can someone please tell me if it is possible
1. to make a new key for an unlocked lock that you don't have the key of. (I understand that it is hard to imagine how that would work in real life, so it might not work in game)
2. to make a new lock for a key in your possession that does not fit any lock around.
I have read something about one of these somewhere, but can't find the thread.

Re: Locks and keys
Now you can't, but I think there are suggestions about it.

Re: Locks and keys
1. No! Some locations, like harbors, are usually unlocked. If anyone could walk in there and start making a key for the lock it would be bad... very bad.
2. I do not think it is possible for a single key to fit several locks, which would be the implication of this.
(3. We have the option to destroy locks and reclaim key for this exact reason.)

Re: Locks and keys
I understand. I thought I had seen something about making locks for keys that you find, even discussing how it could be done, but can't find the thread. Maybe it's the one that Vega means.
Do you know if you get your iron back when you destroy a lock? I think you do when you reclaim a key.

Yes, when you reclaim a key though. You get some iron back. Can't remember if it is the "whole" 10 grams...

Re: Locks and keys
I don't quite see the logic in making a difference between a lock and a key. You need a screwdriver to break a lock, that sounds to me like taking it apart. So you should be able to reuse the iron. But that is not really an important point, so I'm not even going to make a thread in Suggestions for it. There are more important things to be done.

Removing and breaking locks was implemented long before you could tear down machines, so it doesn't use the same mechanism.
