I agree with you. The problem is that death is instant. That doesn't fit so well for Cantr, which is slowpaced. So, we have come up with a solution, the near-death state/ This way, baddies can come and strike down vulnerable characters, potentially take all their stuff, but the victim's player can still log in and call to their friends for help, to be revived.
The combat system is or should be undergoing deep changes. If the vulnerable character from the story above had weapons, then in my opinion they ought to have a chance to defend themselves fairly against any insta-attack. How exactly could that work without being too complicated? See my summary combat suggestions in the other forum.
So in short, we're all equally against unfair instant things, those having no place in Cantr, and that means a fundamental change in the combat system is long overdue and necessary. But I'm arguing that this change, whatever it is, should no longer be totally biased towards the defenders, instead making it so the outcome depends on weapons, skills, and numbers.
Aren't you tired of being perfectly safe all the time, except from the occasional (and stupid) drag-attack? Don't you want to give other characters the chance to defend yours in game, and gain respect, maybe even love, by their valor? It couldn't happen if the entire combat system is stupid like it is now and we're absolutely afraid to change anything, because somebody could be endangered.
