Mitch79 wrote:Pain, lots of pain and more pain lately. :( Going on 2 weeks now, constant pain in my back and sharp pains in my neck. It's gotten bad enough I can not hold my head up at times because it hurts so bad, and the pain makes me sick at my stomach. Trying to avoid muscle relaxers and doctor visit but gotta get by til wednesday (payday), then will try a chiropractor (providing my insurance will cover the visit or he doesn't cost too much). Hope that helps rather than the pain / muscle relaxer meds that make me feel like crap.

I would recommend steering clear of any chiropractor that makes any mention of spinal/vertebral subluxations, "intelligent energy", or has any reference to such on their website or literature other than something along the lines of "Chiropractic as it was originally founded believed that subluxations... but evidence gathered since has shown it to be a STEAMING PILE OF HOKUM"

One estimate I've been given is that (roughly) about 1/3 of the chiros stick to evidence-based medicine, 1/3 are quacks, and about 1/3 are some blending of the two. However, since you're going for back pain I would guess that you're PROBABLY okay, but I'd still be wary of those that would happily lie to get a buck from someone with asthma or a colicky child. Also, do NOT let them adjust your neck (http://whatstheharm.net/chiropractic.html)

To my current understanding, anything that an evidence-based chiropractor does can also be done by a physical therapist in most states. I'd need to do a little more digging to say anything with more confidence though, since it's been a little while since I've followed it closely.

I'm not going to take this personally, because I know that over there chiropractors work in a different way than over here, and many of those ways I don't agree with. But I feel like saying something.

What we call subluxations are tiny maladjustments in the joints that, if not corrected, in time will bring more serious issues. If you have a maladjustment in your ankle, you won't walk correctly, and that could affect your knee, your hip, and even your back. It's MEDICAL EVIDENCE. We learn to interpret X-ray, ultrasounds, NMR, and so on, and we base our treatments in evidence, not in some kind of tricks of sorcery. Our methods differ from the ones used by a physiotherapist, but we're not quacks. It's been centuries of research in this field. We won't cure asthma, but we can help to improve lung capacity and teach the patient how they can breath to feel better. An abdominal massage in a colicky child has proven useful as well, since it helps the bowel movement, reducing the pain and the stress.

There are bad professionals in every field. Cheaters everywhere. People that will lie to get your money. Good that not everyone is like that.

And good that I have enough patients happily healthy and painless after my treatments to know that I'm part of that 1/3 (?) that have proven themselves trustworthy.

(Edit: I just wanted to clarify that I'm talking about Osteopathy here... not exactly the same as Chiropractic. Language issues, my fault, but I think it still applies. This kind of things about a few bad professionals just bring us a bad publicity that, honestly, I don't think we deserve)

Understood, and I hope that I have tread carefully. It is difficult for me not to mis-step since different chiropractors can have quite different practices. Surely, there are various degrees of "cheating" among all practitioners, but it is rare to find say, a licensed gastroenterologist that is an outright quack and by definition, impossible to find a legitimate homeopath. What makes it hard to talk about chiropractic is that while it started out as a psuedoscience by a man named D.D. Palmer who claims to have restored a man's hearing by adjusting a lump in his spine and believed that spinal subluxations were the cause of almost all disease, there are many different factions within chiropractic today, some of which are trying to bring legitimacy to the field.

It is clear that unlike homeopathy and acupuncture, there is at least plausibility to the use of spinal manipulation for certain issues. I feel that the main objection of the skeptics is that the chiros are currently not doing a good enough job policing their own field and building consensus, and thus you never quite know what you're going to get when you pluck a random chiro out of the phone book.

Luckily, I don't think I have an issue with anything you've said Indigo. :D (though I admittedly don't know enough about either of those situations). The kind of crap I'm talking about are chiros that do spinal manipulations on infants to treat colic.

Back to Mitch tho; I would recommend some of the following if you're interested

If you only check out one thing, I'd make it the interview with David Seaman in podcast #88 of the Skeptic's Guide to the Universe. He's an evidence-based chiropractor who comes on to talk about some of the differences and disagreements between the chiropractic factions. It's probably one of the most fair skeptical treatments of chiropractic you'll find. Most others tend to be more dismissive of the entire field, likely for the reason I listed above.

http://www.theskepticsguide.org/archive ... d=1&pid=88

Also the following few written things are decent if you have time, though even I have to admit I haven't read through all of both:
http://www.skepdic.com/chiro.html
http://www.chirobase.org/01General/skeptic.html
http://whatstheharm.net/chiropractic.html

A couple of the big takeaways I get out of it:
* Do NOT submit to manipulation of your neck (cervical vertebrae). It carries the highest risk of serious injury with the least evidence of benefit.
* If you're going to get better with neck & back pain, you should get better within the first few visits. If you don't, at that point the chiro should be referring you out.

My condolences for your loss Vega.

Gather around the ones you love and give lots of good hugs. We all have to go, anything left unsaid becomes regret... regret sucks.

Saw Heart tonight. Wow. I'm like, half their age and can't rock that hard. Ann's voice is as great as ever and Nancy was jamming on guitar, bouncing around the stage. Far better than I expected. I really needed a night out, too.

I didn't realize that losing someone that I knew so little, but was so kindred to when we did speak, would make me so very sad.

Last night my cell phone got the Blue Screen of Death (Death!).
And my laptop's been running pretty slowly as of late as well.

I won't be on very much.
As if I was on very much at all anyway. ><
Hoping to get it fixed tonight.

I need a change. I feel like the bad parts of life are catching up to me and getting the best of me. Trying to focus on the good stuff is getting hard. I hate feeling so negative!
