Yes, that would be good advice, but forgive me here for speaking out, and being damned. This has nothing to do with the last quoted example, or at least I am not addressing it directly (before I get assumed as a sympathiser, this is just an opinion)

We are all missing something here, and it is a simple relationship. It occurs in life, in games, and pretty much any behaviour you choose to examine in any great detail.
When people are 'generally' unhappy with a situation, they will simply create a significant event from which they are able to act... especially in things with a chronic feel to them. Simply put... it is the "right, that's it" point, and in Cantr, this could easily be accommodated within the events of a single char, right or wrong.

The fact that someone wishes to quit over such a 'small' thing is merely indicative of the (more fundamental) 'bigger' reasons, and these reasons, for me at least, revolve around the game just not being as good as it was to play, for whatever reason.

Now, should I appear on these pages saying things like... "it's just not what it was... there's little going on." I will be faced with accusations of lacking effort, being lethargic, or generally misunderstanding the nature of the game. If I appear here and say things like... "I don't like the way things are going for this char and want to quit." I will be faced with "get over it"... "seems to me like you are unhappy about something and can't cope."

Well... for the record... the one things both these positions have in common is that someone wants to quit..! One has simply created a superficial focus by which to move on, rather than just declare a long suffering tedium, and subsequent questioning of our self integrity which ask... why the hell would I suffer this, for this long, and say nothing?

Boggles my mind how people come on here to criticize someone's behavior/expectations, or even a group of people, then get outraged that someone has the audacity to criticize their behavior/expectations in return.

Because if you don't name names, nobody will ever know who you're talking about!... except when they do. And (as backed up by recent PMs), a generalized post is just as likely to make people who you weren't talking about to think it was directed at them. In that sense, it actually broadens the circle of people who may take offense or disagree with it. :D

There are always two sides to every story; often only one of them is voiced. I am not criticizing but perhaps the full story is why there isn't a great outpouring of support. Or maybe people are just callous to the whole "I don't like X, so I might quit" because it's happened so many times and turned out to be a player's cry for attention or attempt to get their way. I'm not saying that scenario applies now but simply offering an explanation to those who question why no one is jumping up to say "Don't do it!!"

I hate to hear someone saying they want to quit, especially when it's possibly a minor thing that involves only one char. As Seko mentioned, it's sad that all the other chars are killed off due to a situation with only one of them.

Oh jeez, my inner hippie must be coming out; I feel the need to refine my comment.

It is always valuable (in my opinion) for people to voice the things that make them feel frustrated by, and disappointed in the game.

When what makes people frustrated by the game is the actions directed by other players, however, then there's now another side to the story. It may be that the complainant's character created a situation that frustrated other players in a similar way. It may be that the disagreement over who is at fault is caused by mismatched expectations over what the game should be like.

There is no reason to think that because you aired your criticisms first, that they are any more valid than anyone else's. In the case of mismatched expectations, it is often the case that the game cannot meet everyone's expectations simultaneously and that someone will have to adjust or sacrifice some of the expectations that they held.

They say that you can't please everyone all of the time. That is true when people have mutually exclusive conditions for pleasure, each of which nobody is willing to back down from. So people are going to state that your expectations were incorrect if they think that they were.

I think the only way to avoid that for some people to just harbor their resentments and disappointments quietly and don't ever expose them to new perspectives - but clearly, I don't think this is a good way of doing things.

It's annoying never knowing what's going on, when Cantr is such an anonymous game. People complain that something is wrong but can't go into details because it would reveal who they play.

Ooooh, well pardon me! Here I was wondering why everyone keeps claiming this game is based on reality! You starve if you don't eat and all that wonderful stuff that comes with magical fantasy land!

Anyway I didn't post here for other people's debates, I just wanted to state the facts. If people don't like them they can change them themselves. I'm not gonna candy-coat how I feel and what I see with my own eyes. I just don't want people to be surprised when ten characters suddenly drop dead. That's all. Not looking for feedback, I'm just announcing it and if it happens everyone knows why I felt that way.

Every response I have to this would probably come off as rude and flaming, even though each would appear to be quite accurate, and there was even a time I would have gone ahead and posted said responses, but it isn't worth it.

So, I will simply say this instead: I like turtles.

Everyone wins.

And of course, when you say 'turtle' you really mean tortoise?

I have been thinking about hitting the X for a long time. It's the opportunity cost. I am more fast paced than many players. I like to check my characters when I get home from work. I like to play my characters for a few hours before I go to bed. I leave social situations because I want to go home and play Cantr. I could be practicing the bass more, working out, hanging out with friends, taking a nap, going to bed earlier and feeling better at work. It's a compulsion with me. I enjoy the game very much but sometimes when I give up other things and sit for hours at the computer with no response, I realize what I gave up to log on. Sometimes I have great RP, sometimes I have nothing going on. 1 character or 15 doesn't matter to me, actually it does... I prefer 15 because that way when I log on, I have a higher percentage of having something happening.

I understand this completely. I tend to take my pastimes to an extreme and did so with this game in the past, finally burning myself out.

This time I will be practicing the Zen of Cantr Character Maintenance.

We'll see how that goes. :)

Hahaha. I broke every rule I set for myself when I came back the second time, and have again reached the burning out point.

I know that feeling, I sometimes stick to my little green screen instead of going out, but the cure can be much mroe simplistic than to hit the X.
You can run away, or you can excersise giant willpower! Just use your discipline, go out and have fun, MAKE that stand above playing cantr. And when you find yourself thinking about your chars, have a new beer and focuss on whatever discussion is going on. No need to obliterate the chars. Just neglect them a bit :D

I usually tend to pick the green over going out unless it's absolutely necessary (like band) but lately my focus when I'm on my laptop has been digital art (think Paint.NET and Photoshop) and creating visual character profiles for my fanfiction, and doing a deep analysis on the series it's derived from.

If I put as much dedication towards my schoolwork, I think I'd qualify for Harvard or something. Lol

I've recently been disappointed. To some extent, it is for the same reason as Bowser. Also I see the game looks like it is starting to go in a different direction than I imagined it would. I've noticed lately that so many of the suggestion that I support are being rejected for one reason or another. I may just be more fast-paced or something than many of the other players, but it has lead me to consider the big X more, little by little.

I say quit. Take your break.
You'll be back. They always come back. If they don't. That's life, everyone understands. If you don't: Grow Up.
This has got to be my own 3rd or 4th time back since 1999-2001. It's easy to become addicted.
As for the fast paced gamers, have a little patience! Delayed gratification. :P J/k I'd love more active players in Cantr too.

But I learned that keeping less characters (3-6) also allows you to have time to yourself, while staying relatively active IG and get shit done. Gives you enough projects and goals to realistically keep track of and lets you know more or less other players playing schedule.
I find it helps to moderate this particular addiction :D

EVERYTHING in moderation is good for you.

Edit: And please no one ask "even rat poison??"... Because Common Sense in moderation goes quite the distance too :P (Always got that one person who says it...)

You should have said, even poison in very low quantities is good for you because it will cause you to be immune to it the next time in slightly larger quantities!
