Umm.. no! As a programmer myself, I was very careful to use half-closed intervals. Did you not notice the greater than signs?? You wanted option 2 (>10-20%). Not to mention I already covered EXACTLY why I had the greater signs there to prevent smart alecks like you back on page two of this topic , viewtopic.php?p=416284#p416284

I don't want to spil hairs here but, I am a researcher, and:
it's generally better to represent >10-20% as 11-20% (50% is actually represented within this 'greater than' category, for instance)
0% is not reprsented, and this would be a significant statistic, as well as...
>60-100% (61-100%) is a massive interval, and also hides the 100%, also a significant statistic.

On the plus side, and because people have varying degrees of char numbers, 10% intervals work well. Any interval other than 1 will miss data here.

soz...

Curious, thanks. I appreciate your input, as I am NOT a professional researcher (although did do quite a bit of polling/stastitics reporting for a 234-page paper I had to write to graduate). But again, the danger with saying 0-10/11-20, etc. (i.e. non-contiguous closed intervals) is that someone with 13 characters, 4 of whom are the opposite sex mightsay, "hmm, it's greater than 30%, but less than 31% (it's ~30.7692%). Guess I can't answer this poll"

I agree that I would love to have 10 10% intervals, but I'm limited to how many poll options I have. As for the "massiveness" of 60%-100%, you can see for yourselves that the actual response didn't reveal much in that range, so it wasn't a real issue (although I agree that I'm masking the significant response of 100% with that).

Seriously people, why the need to try and 'split hairs' on a survey that is already admittedly unscientific in nature, posted in order to satisfy someone's curiosity? If you really want to feel smart, do something useful, like cure cancer.

I do actually think it's a good poll given the limitations of a forum, and for the purposes of gaining a snapshot, you don't really want to go all out and sit on the cutting edge of survey design.
I would get really hung up on this variable char issue, and wouldn't even attempt this out of fear of driving myself nuts.

[edit] This post was submitted, not in response to the one immediately above. However, and whilst my subsequent post in response to it has been removed, I feel the urge to say that the 'cancer' statement is actually very inappropriate, on so many levels.

BALEETED - I have no idea what part of my original post was considered offensive, nor whether the new part is as well, so I'm just going to strip out the whole thing and talk about bunnies with pancakes on their heads.

*shrugs* What's the point...
Sorry to see a reasonable thread go to shit, for the sake of a little critique.

Apologies, gejyspa.

BLAAAABLAAAABLUUUUIIIAAAAAAA!!!!

So anyway.

I personally see it a fun challenge to play the opposite sex, still gives me a vibe to be over-dramatic and highly emotional.

Lolz.

I, personally, was enjoying the back and forth there, as I, while not currently a programmer, do have a Computer Science major and did code at one time. I was thinking of something along the lines of 10 < x <= 20.

I think more poll slots would help.

On playing chars of the opposite sex... I only have three chars now and they are all the same sex as me. I only ever created one opposite sex char in over two years, but they landed in a polish town, and as if I wasn't nervous enough about playing them, that just pretty much killed it for me :(

You should probably take the troll horn off next time. ;) At the conversation didn't get pre-enhanced by the Ministry of Love.

It is curious when people make comments like "So-and-so plays RPs the other gender amazingly well/believably", because what does that actually mean? Do they mean they play a stereotypical female/male well? I don't think there is any personality that you could definitively say belongs to someone of one gender or the other, so there really should be no difference between RP'ing a particular gender well and RP'ing well in general. You may just be playing someone whose personality doesn't fit the pattern stereotypical to their gender, but, MEN AND WOMEN LIKE THAT EXIST IN REAL LIFE TOO. lol

You read George Orwell? I love that book, he writes enchantingly well.

Stereotypes rock! Makes thinking and acting a whole lot faster. Everyone does it, let's just get it in the open and take the taboo off of it! 90% of the time stereotypes are accurate anyway...
