What I wonder about: most talking about criminality here is about thieves and some pirates (which are sailing thieves, I think). But are any other ways of criminality known in the game? Blackmailing, corruption, for example?

What can you do, tell somebody they will strike you with a sabre unless they give you salt? If you did that then all the other people would attack you and you'd be dead before you can hit him again. And then he eats a bunch of grapes and is the perfect picture of health, possibly the new owner of your sabre too.

Corruption would be tricky, since payoffs of any kind can't be made secret easily. People would start to wonder why everyone is giving tomatoes to the guard...

Blackmail might be possible. But without stealth, it isn't easy to discover sensitive secrets. Also, how many characters have any sensitive secrets that they would pay to suppress?

@SekoETC: The idea with blackmail is that the victem doesn't want to tell anyone about it, since that would bring out their secret. With corruption, the victem isn't able to accuse the criminal, because the criminal is a respected leader, and can deny that he made any demands.

Extortion under threat of violence/armed robbery, which you described, only works if you have either vastly superior equipment or have a gang to back you up.

For example: I once ran after a thief, pretending I was a guard. I told him I would not kill him if he would give me 50% of his stolen stuff, and then telling my 'fellow guards' I had killed him. Unfortunately, he appeared to have stolen only non valuable items - stupid newspawns...

Other examples will have to wait untill my characters involved are dead. I know some very nice ways of 'legalizing' stealing...

The best criminals are the ones no one suspects or knows about. It's easier than one might think under the right circumstances. Obviously blatant ones or those who are found out tend to have very short lifespans unless they have some sort of emergency plan or luck. I recently had a pretty intense chase with a character trying to escape while on a vehicle with a person trying to kill them, so they hopped off the vehicle at the next location, and went down an unimproved path while leaving the pursuer locked inside the vehicle, they've been moving ever since. it's difficult, but escape is not always impossible.

I completely agree. And moreover, these characters are most fun to play. Actually, I hate the hit-and-run or steal-and-run type of characters. It's short term playing in 99% of the cases.

Secret crime is nice, but it's hard...

Hit and run can be a long term strategy, if you plan it out and do it right.

I just want to see more successful crime, visible or otherwise.

criminals.. hmmm......

i had a guy wandering a circuit of towns, for 4 years, stealing in every town. They didnt kill him for 4 years and even then he had hit that town twice before... they only killed him the third time through.

Yahsmina Trevontez. killer. Do I need to say more?
Here I am. BITE ME. or not, in fact, never mind, dont want some wacko taking me up on the offer. Only non wacko's may apply for bite allowance.. no garentee that you will be granted said allowance, but you can try.

Damnit. I spelt the name wrong as "Yashmina."

Only a handful of people know her anyways, if I'm not mistaken. The people with her, the one's she has victimized, and the people hunting her.

I don't have any criminals myself. At least not right now  . But one of my charrs is planning on ransacking a killing a few people n a town he was recently in because of the injustices he saw by those clan members and the rudness towards honest people. Not to mention one of them even came after him and hit him and then went back.

Most of my charrs are honest and justice seeking people. Even the one who doesn't like anybody.

I'd like to try a successful criminal at some point. Maybe my next spawn.
