What happens now that I'm in prison?
Either for the crime of collecting nuts or the crime of picking up stuff that was thrown away, I don't know which one. What happens now?

It depends on the town. If they didn't say what you did wrong, ask. Use a note if there's no one around to listen. It was most likely picking stuff up, unless they had a rule that only citizens can gather, or people have to pay taxes or something.
Generally when someone lands up in jail, the player stops playing the character but you shouldn't do that. They'll probably let you out if you give back what you weren't supposed to take and/or promise not to do something again that you weren't supposed to do in the first place.

If you're locked in there, you're not getting out unless someone lets you. I suggest making friends with whoever put you in there.
If you write a note, you can drop it and drag it outside of the building, or try knocking. Just don't overdo it, or you'll just be an annoyance.

Remember, everything besides mechanics, is controlled by the characters of the players. There is no AI, and no automated situation, save for a few conditions.
If you wind up in prison, a character put you there. That means you need to be patient, and negotiate your release in a style that you think your character would.
Speak to your fellow citizens... Become part of the community. They have the answers.

In all likelihood, you will be left in jail for a while.

Apparently you are new to the world of Cantr and I do hope your captors can realize that you are still learning the mechanics of the game.

Tampering with any of my chr's nuts, carries the death sentence...
Back on topic:
Often a jail sentence will be for an allotted time only, but it is still important to be patient, as other chars may well have to discuss what to do with you, and determine a sentence.
Now, that said, it may be that you are just left, and you should also be aware that this is not necessarily down to 'your' playing, and you shouldn't be disheartened. In some respects, because Cantrians are 'driven' by real life people, they are capable of th most banal and cruel things in game.
I like to think that they will talk to you soon enough, and you can negotiate.
If a lot of time passes, and they don't? I would be tempted to create a new char. (assuming that there is still a waiting period, on the loss of a last remaining char... someone correct me here please?)
Good luck

Let me say that I think that most players when they start end up with a char in jail for picking stuff up off the ground because there used to be so many problems with newspawns stealing and running that it is an automatic response to jail a new person for touching anything. That being said, with the Vega Effect it might be time to tone that down a bit and not lose the new people we are getting to jailing their chars before they learn how to play the game.

I have to agree with that. I struggled enough to learn even the very basics. It was two days before I learned how to point, and a week before I knew how to build anything.
If I was thrown in prison for a newbie error, and given what would feel like silence treatment (aka one whole hour of event silence

I know people have discussed this before, and suggested that some 'pointers' be available on the main page, but maybe if there were one pointer only... it should be how to pick up a note, and read it, and then also suggest that the new player look for the note that looks like it may have laws on it?

I think the problem is solved now and someone is not in jail anymore
