Population Boom?

Postby Chris » Tue Nov 15, 2011 7:06 am

According to the turn reports, the past couple of weeks have seen a lot of new players and characters in Cantr.

Code: Select all

Day    Plyrs  Chars

3400   810    4609
3410   811    4605
3420   881    4724
3430   965    4769

Does the staff know why this is happening? If it is result of some marketing effort or word-of-mouth promotion, that's great. If it's someone or a group plotting CRB mischief, that's a problem.

I can't tell you why there are more new players (maybe other staff members will :) ), but I can assure you that the Players Department checks sign-ups before accepting them and that we will notice when there's something suspicious about a group of new players, so I think you don't need to worry about that. :D

We have been hiring new Liaison Officers for all language groups, pushing for marketing Cantr, using the voting links and so on. Obviously it works. Click the voting links! And obviously, this is now officially known as the Theda effect. :)

The Theda effect is also affecting the number of visitors in the forum :D

Well, I'm all for this Theda Effect... a job well done.
And, I have to say, I have seen some interesting spawns lately too.

There is also a small bug that makes some accounts not idle out properly. Lets see in a couple of days...

144 players... 164 chars... It might be many more players but so far not that impressive or very noticable in game

I am happy to hear that the game directory voting is having an effect. I will try to vote regularly.

Is there any data about which sites are getting us the most hits?

The list of voting sites is so long that I would never go through them all. I click on several at the top of the list before my good will runs out. Perhaps the list should be prioritized. Or there could be a few "votes of the month" links that rotate.

Most new players will just do one or two chars at the start. Under those most will stop playing again as the chance is big they spawn at a place they're ignored or just not able to do much.

We are currently revamping the administrative tool for managing these links. We are also thinking about limiting them, so that maybe you see a few random links every time you visit the page, instead of the whole list. Another idea is to show one you didn't click yet today on other pages too.

We have just implemented prioritizing.

I don't mind having to vote at all of those links lol but okay I have much time to do so.

I like to be optimist, so let's think that in these two days of testing to see if it fixed the bug, they will have not 144 players less due idled.

I would not like this to discourage anyone. Although we can not know exactly how many players we have, I think we have raised the number of players and we have obtained results through the efforts of all, staff and players.

In a couple of days (probably) we may know.

Anyways, I love the name of "Theda Effect". I want to be remembered in the History as the cause of that effect! Help me! xD

I like the idea of limiting the number of links displayed to the player at any given point, as it is likely to encourage more people to click them if you limit it to just a couple at once and display them more prominently. Ideally there would be a small "more" or "+" button that would provide a full list for people that are so inclined.

Also, has any thought been given into whether it would be better focus for a higher number of votes on a smaller number of sites in order to focus on getting a higher ranking on a couple? Since we currently provide the full list, I would guess "no". The way I see it working would be, if we only show a couple of links at a time, have it be the ones we are focused on getting a higher ranking. Then, if the player has already clicked those within the last 24 hours or whatever the voting reset period is, show the other links in their place.

I usually vote a couple of sites everytime I am online and there is no Cantr activity, but then I forget in which sites I have already voted. It would be helpfull if those sites, I already votes where grayed out. And also some links open a new browser window where others open on the same window. I'd like to have the same logic in all voting links. :)
