Re: Cantr Emotions
I am mildly heartbroken watching the way one of my chars is acting right now, actually. XD I want to smack some sense into him, but he's got "someone" else trying to smack a completely different kind of sense into him. Gah!

I'm a sympathetic crier. (and laugher)
I cry at the movies all the time and when reading novels, so why not cantr. It doesn't even have to involve my character.
I don't think it means I take it all that seriously or that it effects the rest of my life. I just enjoy the emotional highs and lows while I'm immersed in the story.

Re: Cantr Emotions
I have immersed myself into playing the anguish of a lover/wife/fiance that I knew ooc was going to sleep to death and kept her alive to play that out. It was sad only in that I really tried to be the character that was watching his entire life waste away in a dying person that he could keep alive, but could not save could never wake up and could never hear an 'I love you from again'. Mixing the stages of grief including the denial, the self-blame, the anger, desolation, resignation and all of the stages between led me to allow myself to feel some of the emotions just for the sake of being able to write from that perspective and hopefully I was (and still am) capable of transferring those emotions through the printed medium. Growing attached to others chars and showing that appreciation for the way they are played by sticking a small slice of yourself into the interactions seems natural to me, just like giving a hug to someone you care about in RL. We are playing a role here and maybe we owe it to others by doing it as well as our mastery permits, if they are giving the effort I will too. There are reasons that certain chars get praise often from different sources I guess.
I don't mourn my own chars so much, though I have only lost one to date.

This does seem like a good time to read Anti-social Hermits siggy though.

Re: Cantr Emotions
I sometimes get way too caught up emotionally, and sometimes have to blow my nose before I can keep playing. I'm sure my hubby thinks I'm wacko, but he never says anything. I agree Seko, it is very difficult to play happy chars when one or two are crying and miserable.....why do I have so many sad characters any more? (actually I don't, only two, but it makes it feel like more when they continue to be sad for so long)
My problem is I have to get into the emotions of my characters to roleplay all their emotions properly, but it can be very taxing. I sometimes wish I was just a simmer, but that's never going to happen. (I do have 2 simmer characters, though.....damn, they're boring! lol)

Re: Cantr Emotions
I have three characters at the moment who make me smile. One is just naturally that way (and I put a /lot/ of effort into that....I'm not "bubbly" like she normally is), and another one is from another character whom mine spends time with frequently. And then the third who is just.... <3 I would date him and make him my bestest friend everrr if he were in real life.
The rest of mine are either too boring or too uptight/literal.

Re: Cantr Emotions
I've often felt the extreme giddiness or the haunting confusion or the crushing depression of my characters and the characters around them. Anything they go through that causes them true, deep emotions, I feel. Once in a while it will persist into my real mood. But I've learned to take a step back sometimes.
I'm not a person that cries when I read or watch something sad. There are a very few movies or books that I can ever remember tearing up at even minorly. Mostly because, while I feel the emotions very strongly, I do not express them so readily, especially around others.
I feel like investing some emotion and a piece of ourselves is almost integral to creating a character as a full and rich entity that could almost stand on its own if it were put into reality. It's something that can help a player keep in touch with how that character might respond to the myriad of situations it may find itself in. It also brings relatability of the character to the others around it; altogether creating a world that is immersive and wonderful for all who choose to participate in it.
But it can go too far, and we must learn how best to judge when we get too invested emotionally- which is individually different. So long as those emotions for a character don't adversely affect a person's real life in the long run, I think it's healthy.

Re: Cantr Emotions
I'm afraid I'm guilty of this and am just as easy to feel emotional over trouble someone else's character is having as for my own characters. I'm just hyper empathetic and I even do it for the characters I create in stories I write. I'm pretty sure it's a curse.

Re: Cantr Emotions
My characters definitely affect me, but my characters are generally like me..in their own different ways. It's pretty rare for there to be something in Cantr that affects me greatly, but it happens. For me, being emotional is mostly thinking about something a lot, getting lost in thought for days.

I have been crying for real when one of my chars was in trouble. I even woke up in the middle of the night thinking about what was happening.
