Role-play experience

Postby Black Canyon » Sun Aug 01, 2004 12:58 am

I've been wondering. I've been playing the game for a couple of months and although I am probably older than the majority of other players, I am relatively new to this type of role-play. I've been really impressed with the skill that many players demonstrate through their characters and it makes me want to improve the quality of my role-play as well. It seems clear to me that many who play this game have had past role-playing experience, some have even mentioned it, and I would be interested in knowing what those past experiences might have been.

Not sure that I fall under the 'experienced roleplayers' category, but two years of Cantr have drastically improved my roleplaying.

I know a few people used to do freeform RPing on Yahoo and other channels.

This was my first (and only) foray into RPing, though. You learn the ropes with time.

As west said.. im one of the people who used to do other role playing. On the yahoo chat rooms that you can get into from the messenger, that was my first type of role playing, cantr my second. (and last) :)

www.thepark.com was my first place for rp. Used to have silly pie fights and pools full of Jello. (Noob style.) Until they started charging for membership anyways.

Then on to Yahoo! which grew tiring after about a year because veteran RP'ers seemed to grow chips on their shoulders and ridiculed noobs yet acted very much like noobs themselves with all of their ooc chit chat. Became very hard to find someone who was serious about their characters enough to guaruntee a good session with out OOC interuptions.

Then it was on to Cantr of which I grow tired of from time to time, but can never seem to stay away from. Been playing for two years if you don't count the few days in-between when I thought I was going to quit once, but only ended up making a new account a few days later.

(Do any of you wonder what life will be like, after Cantr? )

I'm really blown away by how addictive this game is. Of course I am still too new to have gone through any "tired of it" periods. Many of my characters have already formed strong attachments or emotions toward other characters, both positive and negative. I am currently rationalizing my involvement by considering it a good way to develop my social-skills and verbal expression (since I tend to be pretty asocial in spite of my career choice, which I won't go into) and also as a way to improve my spanish language skills (although I currently only have one character in that area), but the truth is, I'm just doing it because it is really fun :D

Sometimes I wish I could quit, but I can't.

Does that mean I need help?

I have been playing Cantr since September of 2003, and since then, I have been an addict. I have not once gone a day without checking my characters, except twice--once when I was unconcious for two days, and the other when we moved across country.

I like to think I'm a pretty experienced role player, but Cantr has been my first and only role playing game that I'm addicted to. I've tried a few other games, but they just weren't for me. I find Cantr a way to escape the harsh reality of the world and just enjoy myself being other people. I am sad to say I find myself very emotionally attached to my characters. I have cried over Cantr, laughed over Cantr, stayed up at night worrying about Cantr, and even dreamed about Cantr on various occaisions.

 its just soooo beautifull. kinda brings a tear to your eye.

I have several rpging experience. I first started out with D&D third addition. But after becoming a force so powerfull I could actually challenge a god I become bored with it.

Then I ran into Utopia. I nice rpg that lets you become the leader of a province part ofa kingdom of up to 24 other players. and u elect a king and build ur lands and challenge other kingdoms in war. But yet again I became a legend as a master halfling rogue have abtained a nice little record.

I tried this once before but didnt get to into it until i got tired of utopia and searched for this game. Now I am back and here to stay. I got so into this game that I hardly ever go a day without checking things at least twice a day. I made 13 characters (all can be found named in the directory topic) and they all keep me busy. But I have thought about maybe just one more character. there keeps being island i havent been able to get on.
I am the Dragon Slayer. And as long as I have my friends behind me. I will never fall.

Past roleplay experience... I love this subject. In the age of ancent Romans and before that Egyptians... Ok, lets not get that far, I wasn't even born then... but anyway, when I was a kid, I was very interested in roleplaying, theoretically, though my mother kept telling me it's all satanic. I read all the guides and manuals I could find. When I was 13 I went to this one international camp where one evening was dedicated to RP, there was this shady larp I didn't quite get a grip on but nevertheless we had fun.
I tried to arrance my own larp with some friends but it kinda sucked, since it based a lot on characters that we couldn't find players for, the plot was printed just minutes before the game started and I had to push the co-leader's responcibilities to my friend since my character was a disturbed little maid who only talked to his father, hard to lead a game from that kind of role. That lead to funny things since my friend didn't have time to read the background material, so she read aloud things that were for game master only, like that there was a sceleton in a locked room... or that when we had to search for a secret note there was this old maple tree on our yard and in the base material it read that someone with a limber character may climb in the tree to search for the note.. and then when someone did, our fresh game master noticed the subtext that said climbing isn't actually necessary since the note isn't really there. And since we had only four players (including me and my friend the GM) we had to imagine that there were invisible enemy trolls... Actually, when I think of it now it was quite funny. :)
When I was 16 or 17 there was a table top game arranged in the local youth house. We played whole evening every Wednesday for a month or so and it was also very fun though there wasn't much players. The GM was so great, loved him.. But then he went to army and we had to stop the game. First we played Rolemaster, in the summer we were going to start a zombie game called All flesh must be eaten but we didn't get so far with that.
Later that summer I tried to make a table top version of Fallout but it didn't work so well, I was too dominant as a GM, plus we had this one player who came in only once and then left apparently because she didn't like the fact that the character I created for her was black. (Kelly Crow, with rastafari hair and strange eyeglasses.) Then school started and we didn't have time to play anymore. We tested AD&D once, I being GM once more, but it was a total fiasco...
Online I started with RaceWarKingdoms *coughsuckscough* and did a little solo RP with a weirdo drow character. It started at a barbique party, then turned more serious. When I got bored with RWK I transfered Lizard to a Finnish RPG chatroom. Mostly solo also there. Basic data about Lizzie now as a kid she messed up with a spell that ruined her face and it tends to reactivate on irregular basis. So every once in a while her face seems to explode full of little craters, and yes it hurts. In RWK she was raped by her enemies since she was a raider then and she gave birth to a half-demon son whom she can't kill for some reason. Getting soft around the edges? I haven't been playing lately but the kid is one and a half years old now already, and he looks a bit older since the demon influence makes him develop a bit faster.

So, you've been RPing a lot then, Seko?

Cantr. And a bit of wishful thinking.
